I don't know if it's the same in the UK or elsewhere, but here in Oz something I've noticed since owning a bike is "the nod". Any bike I pass or ride next to, stop at lights or intersections etc. there's always a nod from rider to rider and I'm happy to reciprocate - this nice little acknowledgement that you're part of the sibship (brotherhood might not be PC enough these days) of riders who love riding and have got your back in traffic. Gotta look out for each other as the small guys on the road I guess. Anyone have a similar experience? Maybe it's just cos I'm riding an awesome classic bike I dunno...😝

I’ve found “the nod” system in U.K. is dependent on what you ride, certain types of bikes/riders won’t reciprocate unless for instance your riding an “adventure “ bike like them ( they’re usualy in too much of hurry ) generally Harley riders don’t ( unless your on a Harley ) Sportsbike riders only to Sportsbikes but not all.I used to commute 20 miles daily and would use a different bike ie classic/Harley/Fireblade seeing same oncoming bikes coming other way but wouldn’t get a nod if I was on the “wrong” bike, very silly.I nod to all .What part of Oz are you in Jim?

Brisbane Qld 👍
I could agree that choppers and cruisers do it a bit less...

My own personal experience from riding in the UK (mainly the South East and the South Midlands) is that some bikers will give the nod, some won't. The head to toe leather clad ride by wire crotch rocket guys are so busy with their tinted visors........sprawled across the tank and knees down, they don't appear to have time to nod to anyone - very self obsessed - totally in a world of their own. Possibly the same with some of the Harley guys (with a very different riding style of course). I'd say roughly 50-60% of the bikers I came across gave the nod. In the States, it's not a nod but a lowered left handed two finger salute.......most bikers no matter what they are riding will give this in the experience I have had....that said, I have only ridden in one State and the US is a big place.

Awesome! If you get a chance when you hire a bike go for a ride through the blue mountains area if you haven't been before. I've never ridden there myself but that would have to be on the list for sure. Also any of the areas around the Hawkesbury river about an hour north of Sydney such as Mooney Mooney are absolutely stunning.
I've gotta be nice about Harley riders as my father in law rides a fat boy. Though he owned a cb750 in the 70s so he gets the old Hondas too 👌

Riding in France recently passing bikers waved with lowered left hand, kicking the left leg out was the norm few years back.I’ll keep giving the nod or occasional wave .When I started riding 1969 on a Lambretta and then a BSA 250 I don’t recall being waved/nodded by passing bikes but when I moved on to a bigger 350 Triumph I was waved at by most bikers, strangely Reliant owners used to wave or flash their lights when passing another Reliant, very embarrassing 🙀 Been to Blue Mountains Jim stunning views,Grandkids tried getting me on the railway there but I escaped lol. next visit maybe.

I,m a social type of geezer so I nod regularly, and yes I agree the big v bikers tend to nod less but not all of them some give a nod or two , even get the odd nod from the Vespa/Lambretta owners

Hmm can't say I've noticed any other signals like speed traps etc. Will have to keep a closer eye on things.
Maybe I could kick off the left leg thing here... Pun intended..

first time I got the thumb down signal was from a harley rider, I was running a suzuki gs250 custom at the time that I thought I'd 'chopped' (made a complete arse of) and I thought he was trying to tell me my bike was a piece of crap (it was to be fair) I was still cursing flashy harley riders under my lid when I came across the speed trap round the next bend, then the light bulb went on so to speak
