Well ..... the SD lives. Got is started today - just turned it over by hand first, cranked the starter a fair bit before puttting the kill switch on and it fired right up.
Engine sounds perfect - but with 600 miles from new I had hoped it would be. Exhaust system is rock solid and sounds exactly as I remember - the slight off beat note.
Bit fluffy on throttle opening - i'm guessing this is blocked pilot Jets ? Wondering if there is an easy way to get to these - looks like it might be possible to drop the float bowls without removing the carbs ?
Engine is super smooth - absolutely zero vibration
Tacho seems slow to respond - anyone encountered this before ?
I'm really pleased with progress so far - it's cleaning up nicely - withvery few parts required, and i'm deciding whether to leave most of the parts as is - ie rather than go for as new - leave the slight patina of age - the plated parts are all really good - just slightly duller than brand new.
Anyway - just thought i'd share that progress is being made - thanks for the all the great advice so far - no doubt more will be required yet.

I was on the toilet a few days ago and something struck me about your bike. It was a memory that has now hit me from around ten years ago.
The silver dream racer text on the side panel was what reminded me. I'm quite sure this bike was being sold off by a closing down small family owned Honda dealer in the North of England somewhere. It was listed on ebay with no takers as it was quite a high price (for back then). I'm convinced this is that very bike.

it might be possible to get to the pilot jets with the carbs on, but I'd be inclined to take them off (guessing its 'fluffy' at lower revs?) the bikes obviously spent a lot of its life stood and the carbs would probably benefit from a thorough clean. if you get your posts up to 20 then have a look at wazbos carb guide. other people have poured redex (I think) into the carbs and left them overnight, never tried it myself but that could work too.

Hi Fungobat - According to the write up from an auction is was Stavely Garage in Shipley - seems it sat there from 1981 to 2007 - looks like someone got is from there when they shut down and then it was sold again in 2008 to the guy I bought it from recently - he bought it in an auction in Harrogate. The lettering was weird - it was very well done in the same font as the superdream - someone must have created a template and cut it out then painted it in - i've now removed it with nail varnish remover tbh - it seemed to be part of it's history, but I just felt it was too naff personally - each to their own I suppose. Anyway it's gone and no harm to the panels as a result. I don't really think the mileage is all that relevant - i plan to use it after all - but it does mean that it has been messed about very little - very very original. So far i've established it's got a pattern ignition lock (guess the keys were lost somewhere down the line), the battery door is missing, it's obviously fallen over at some point as scratched butt they are vertical - ie it's been down a wall or dropped at near zero speed, the front mudguard needs re-chroming but it's only cosmetic corrosion - it's solid and general cleaning and polishing. I do like it's originality

Hi Buster The bike started fine and ticks over nicely - if the throttle is 'cracked' open fast it just stumbles before picking up. I'm going to pop the tops off and trickle redex in every orifice and make sure the slides are nice and free - as you say it might clean up, it might not - cheers

The “restore” “recommission” is a personal choice
My German 400 I decided to just recommission as it had character and was in fair condition - SME will be a full restore
I would use it while then decide
