I remember seeing a few and for me they look so awkward , how was that thing supposed to make a motorcycle safer ??

It wasn’t to make the bike safer it was a way to ride a bike over 250cc legally

So you didn’t have to sell your 250 when the law changed ie 125 max for learner.Law was always that a learner could ride a large capacity motorcycle on L plates if a sidecar was used on it

My avatar is me with my mates Phil & Bernie on Phil's Norton 650 outfit with a kneeler style sidecar and L plates back in the 60s. Plodding around on a Brit 250 waiting to pass his test wasn't for him.

Mate of mine had a BSA Spitfire with GP Amal’s on it with a sidecar and L lates he put a rod through crankcase one night racing me on my Triumph T90

great pic ian. actually thought about buying the side winder (for historical value) as its only about 15 miles down the road, I'll wait and see if he drops it to £20

I can see how there were a few around after the learner law changed, probably cheaper than trading in your 250 that nobody wanted by then for a 125 now in demand.
