Phew , that looks a good tool , for a moment I was prepared for pics of a broken extractor inside a stud , which gives more problems - well done .

Impressive. Never tried one, but it looks like they work!

they certainly do work, but you still need to take care with the amount of force being applied.
they are not cheap, I think a full 6 piece set is about £30, But my local tool shop, Portland Tools in Lincoln sold me a single one out of a box.

Also, I think the advantage in this scenario that it can grab the stud close to the base preventing twist in the stud and hence snapping

Used to use this type of extractor on the old Gardner diesel engines when I worked for the local bus company many years ago. Rather than fit on a socket wrench though, they had a 'T' bar through the top section which was hexagonal (the top of the barrel, not the 'T' bar) so you could get a socket/spanner on it if needed. They worked every time and I never heard of a stud breaking off.

Have used Portland Tools many times Jonny and always found them to be obliging.

This was bought from Portland Tools in Lincoln. It's an old school tool shop, in Lincoln. They don't have an online shop any more, but they are proper knowledgeable. www.portlandtools.co.uk
