So after a few enjoyable days on the 400, I rolled it into the shed tonight after getting home, and in the quiet of the evening heard a strange noise which I can only assume is the oil boiling, similar to the sound with which anyone who has overcharged a battery will be familiar. Seems to be loudest around the clutch cover area.
Quickly took the below video which gives some idea as to the sound, apologies it was dark and i'd already switched the lights out, but filmed close to the clutch cover.
Any ideas?!

boiling point of water is 212 deg fahrenheit standard engine oil is about 572 deg fahrenheit the flash point of engine oil is about 420 to 460 F i do not believe your engine oil is boiling one your engine now would be scrap and we would have herd on the newes a motorcyclist spontaneous combusts .you have back pressure problems gases escaping from the oil filler cap

I had a similar thought about the gas pressure, but opened the oil filler to try to get a better look/listen and nothing changed... The bubbling/fizzing/boiling continued...

Sounds like your frying an egg on the collector box! Don't know what that is...

thinking a bit out loud here but it sounds a bit like heat dam (maybe?) this could be something like oil struggling through, say, a partially blocked oil feed in the motor. if its under insane pressure it could possibly boil but only in a very localised area ie partially blocked oil feed. if it was me I'd whip the plugs out, put the bike on its side stand and take the clutch cover off (yes its going to be messy) then gently rotate the engine and see if you can see anything obviously wrong.

I've had the clutch cover off previously to attend to the balancer chain and everything looked very healthy, going to take it out for a little run this afternoon and see if it does the same thing again.
I know oil flow to the top end of the engine is good as I've cranked it with the rocker box removed and made quite a mess.
Are there any oil pressure relief valves or such like which could be sticking?

Mike. Is the noise definitely coming from the engine? I had a bike that made a similar noise after a run, and it was air being sucked through the fuel filler cap as the breather was partially blocked, causing the tank to vacuum. Just a thought!

all fluids work on the same principle increases the pressure the boiling point go's up do you here the sound all the time or when it's running your colector box full of water good joke.

Did you get this worked out Mike?

It hasn't happened again, and the only thing I've done is replaced a sticky clutch cable. Current thinking is that the release bearing had been dragging and got very hot and the sound was oil fizzing and burning off it... I'm keeping a close eye (ear) on it after every ride.
