So the first problem on the bike was a weedy spark as I reported. After much cleaning of contacts and suspecting expensive things like coils and CDI units it was the EARTH STRAP. Doh.....I should have checked that first but all the frame was earthing OK, lights worked etc etc but the engine block wasn't earthing so the spark couldn't complete it's circuit properly. Took the strap off, quick clean and back on - instant big fat blue spark. I'm confident it will start OK now when I get the carbs cleaned which is the next job.
The carbs look pretty clean, do I NEED to separate them? Looks like I can get to everything with them fastened together.

you can get to most things with the carbs together, I took the top joining bar off mine as it makes them a bit easier to get them in and out of the frame as a pair.

Thanks Buster. I cleaned the outside of the carbs this morning, I'll check the jets this afternoon. Good tip about the bar, they are a bit of a bugger to get in and out
