Subject line says it all, I bought my K100 off eBay, after the auction finished, from a chap in Devon. never even looked at it paid to have it collected to Lincoln.
It has issues, sure I contacted the chap a couple of times to get information of his experiences of it to aid my investigations. took two years to sort but...
I was prepared for this, I've 30 years of bike tinkering experience. it's a 30 year old bike, spares are easy to come by and it's the price of owning a classic bike.
I've had similar experiences to you Carl, and quite often now I'll just take a hit and sell the bike as an unfinished project.
Buying? Do your research, talk to the an owners group, go see it, ride it if possible, unless you have deep pockets make sure you have the technical ability to maintain it. And above all be prepared to be disappointed, owning classic bike is a love affair and may not always deliver a smile every day.

maybe not too relevant but to me a car is a bit like a portable rubbish dump, hence I run bangers at the cheap end of the market (its a tool that does a job, no passion for them) and the one I’m running now is a toyota yaris that I gave £450 for and it had its fair share of problems. did both wishbones, both cv joints, both track rod ends, one rear spring and both anti roll bar bushes. I never thought of complaing to the seller, it was sold as seen, the only thing that really bothered me was when a front brake started squeaking and I found that some bodging git had not put the anti rattle clips in and to compensate had actually bent one of the brake pads, this in turn knackered the disc, not expensive and not difficult to fix but potentially dangerous. ultimately though it was sold as seen.

Thanks for all the replies to the thread, I must admit it makes me feel much better reading your replies, the member who purchased the VT250F hasn't visited the forum for a while, he texted me to ask what I thought the forum members advice to him would be? I took this as being a threat so put the question up myself. I will not say any more on the matter unless the purchasing member wishes to put his point of view on the thread. Again thanks for all your input.

the problem is people's expectations are different what one person minter is a pile of crap to outhers. I do not know what issues there is with the bike.but I find most problems can be resolved. as my old engineer said there is no such thing as a problem just solutions

Definitely agree with everyone who says 'Buyer Beware'. The only legal comeback a buyer of second-hand items has (in private sales anyway) is if the item was mis-described. A difficult one to prove anyway, but if you're a decent guy (and I'm certain you are Carl) it's very hard to ignore it when someone accuses you of being less than fair. It's only natural to question yourself as you want to do the right thing, and it's hard to tell someone to go away (politely or otherwise) and leave you alone. I've just bought an '83 400NB and understood full-well that it was up to me to ensure it was what I needed and in the condition I wanted. I know it needs a lot of work and wasn't fooled by the nicely painted engine and new grips. No way could I go back to the seller now and complain that something isn't right. Don't worry mate, legally and morally you should have a clear conscience.

I personally saw a video CTB showed the (then) potential buyer and I thought it was really good, very comprehensive. No one can check every single nut and bolt on a used motorcycle plus to my understanding, the transaction went ahead without an MOT being requested. To the member (buyer) concerned who I don't know who it is and if you are seeing this, we are not ganging up on you, we are just being honest with our thoughts. As Carl has said, join us with your views if you disagree or agree.
