Due to recent activities in my life I have been compelled to create this thread. I was recently contacted by a fellow member, asking if I knew of any Honda VT250F bikes for sale. As I had recently seen two such bikes on two sites I replied asking what budget the member had. The bikes I had seen were within budget so I contacted the sellers only to find that both bikes had been sold. On reporting back to the member I stated I had such a bike that I may consider selling. I gave details and photos/videos were sent, after some negotiating a sale was agreed. The member arranged for a company to collect the bike which was done safely. On receipt of the bike I believe the member was very happy as he sent me a photo standing proudly with the bike. Unfortunately this was short lived and under closer scrutiny the member was not so happy. Lengthy correspondence then pursued over days and weeks. I believe myself to be a honest person and I have never had problems with buyers of any of my cars or bikes in the past. Today I received a text from the member asking "what do you think the members advice to me would be on the Super Dream forum?'" This text has upset me and I would ask the member to ask the question. Obviously I would not wish to name the member, but it would be interesting to find out what other members thoughts were on buying and selling. Rant over - sorry if you think the thread is not appropriate for the forum.

Looks a nice bike, (loved the B reg one I had for many years from new), what was the problem with that? Did they go for changing the spark plugs perhaps, always good fun...
I have to admit that I do not sell vehicles very often, our family tend to buy new and keep them until the are non-viable.
The most recent purchase, a CB400NC almost a couple of years ago, so far I've renewed the swing arm, built new forks for it (yet to fit) and renewed the exhaust and still the brakes to swap out for overhaul. I expected to do some work on it, the attraction was the engine was running sweet...A bit more work than expected, but never went back to the seller.

IMHO it was a lovely bike engine was sweet, I never had it one the road (taxed and MOT'd) but rode it on private land and it was a sweet little thing quite fast for a 250. I think if you buy bikes of this age you need to be a bit handy on the spanner side of things or you have to expect rather large bills if you take them into motorcycle dealers or repair shops. It was probably foolish by both parties to sell/buy it without an MOT. Again I do believe I would have got it through an MOT with a minimal outlay.

My friend sold his sunbeam this summer 5 weeks later the guy rang up and said the engine as gone bang, went down to have a look and he was Wright geat hole in the engine were the conrod had tried to escape.the bike was known to me for some years and the guy no sold him the bike is very knowledgeable about the bikes he owns.i told the guy a engine does not destroy itself like that.the bike was 60 years old and was told he had been riding it like his R1 and it had gone bang on the A10 on his way back from squires.i have bought and sold cars and bikes for many years but not as a business.classic bikes you cannot give any type of guarantee and you will find the trade even will not guarantee them.you can not.why is he unhappy with the bike.i have found out buying and selling through third parties or unseen is a minefield and I have found that punters want the world.the last two months I have been putting a for sale sign on my A10 at the local bike night no price just my mobile.i have had loads of interest till they find out what I want and my words are if you can find one as good as this cheaper buy it if not let me know I will.i have found people have fads they get there dream item and there bubble bursts.i had a fad for a 1915 royal Enfield I wanted it went down 12k in the back pocket the guy is a very good friend he said give it a run up and down the lane first,I probably would have more chance flying and landing a jumbo than rideing that bike and he knew that, we shook hands and agreed it's not for me.i would tell them your decision to buy it if it not up to your expectations I am sorry but it's your problem

Hi Mark, I don’t want to go into too much detail as I was hoping to get some input from the buyer, as with all things there are two sides to all stories. I just can’t understand people who buy old cars and bikes and expect them to be like a new or less than 5 year old model. To me the bike had good credentials as it had very low ownership and low miles these items are rare, the condition was as good as you could expect from an old bike.

Carl Buyer beware if it was described accurately
My first car I bought at auction you had an hour to determine if it was not as it should be
Relax take it in your stride - no come back on you IMHO

Definitely Buyer Beware
I have bought a bike in good faith only to find out it was a wrong un. Took it on the chin as I would like to think there was no intent
And
When ever I have sold one I try not to leave anything out of the description.

I'm with Dave & the others Carl. It looks a nice bike, would have liked it myself. I haven't sold much in the way of classics - can't bear parting with them - but most of the cars & bikes I've had over the years have been old bangers & I've never got back to a seller or had a buyer get back to me - you can't expect perfection with old vehicles & anything can go wrong with them anytime. And don't let it get to you - I think you've just been unlucky with this guy, most people know the risks involved with old vehicles

Agree too. Buyer beware. A new bike must be bought if no faults are to be expected. And even then??

By the way, one thing you should never do if buying an older bike is put it into a motorcycle garage where labour rates can be astronomical for even minor work. This is very unrealistic.
If you cannot tinker with these things yourselves then take it from one who knows, this is NOT the scene for you, unless you have deep pockets.
