Can anyone tell me what shade of gold the original comstar wheel would have been painted in ?
Or can you suggest the nearest match to the original colour?

Yes, ford solar gold is pretty close, I've recently done NC fork cases using the Halfords solar gold, which turned out a slightly light. So I gave them a very thin coat of humbrol acrylic brass, and then misted over with solar gold again to get the shade. But the mistake I made was that that the brass had not dried enough, leached through a little when the gold was drying, so it's ended a fraction darker, but still close to original.
