Hi, folks. Would anyone know the tacho ratio of an 89 DX? Cheers. Tony.

The tachometer drive for the US CM/CB 400/450 engine is 1.7:1

dont wish to throw a spanner in the works here but my nighthawk engine is actually 4:1 (I tried to find out the lazy way ie looked online and theres lots of conflicting information) I know your engine is the dx but its probably worth checking the ratio (I’m guessing your fitting a different tacho?) and its easy to do. undo the cable at the engine end and put atiny dab of permanent marker on one side of the drive blade, then put a tiny dab next to it on the casing, whip the plugs out of the head and take the mag wheel cover off, then turn the engine over carefully counting how many turns of the engine it takes (ie 7 turns of the engine=1 turn of the tacho drive then 7:1 ratio) to turn the tacho drive one complete rotation.

Cheers, Buster. You are correct - I am indeed swapping the rusty old Dream clocks, that a previous owner fitted, doubtless after a front-ender. Looking at the little chrome jobs that are over the place. Looks like your method is the way for both tacho and speedo but also wondering if a language barrier is getting in the way - some guys are saying they've fitted 7:1 without issues which is at odds to the figures Fungo (and others have confirmed) mentions above. The research and experiments continue..............

makes me wonder if honda ran out of 7:1 parts and then reverted to 4:1 for some engines, we’ll probably never know
