Hi all, one of the last parts required to finish off the 400 is a left hand brake caliper, is it by any chance the same as the left (and only) caliper on the 250? As if it is then the ebay search will probably be far easier and more fruitful!

I had a similar question about the rear brake cam bolt, britpete very wisely suggested having a look on cmsnl it can be a really useful tool for comparing honda parts

Hmm, it appears they are not the same, though there are so many supersessions and different ways in which the caliper is broken down i'm still not completely sure!

The 400 calipers have "NISSIN" on the side. These calipers are also use on CB750 & CB900 of the era, but mounted on different brackets to account for the different disc diameters.

I am in the process of rebuilding the brakes on my 400 and have discovered that one of the front bracket retainer clips (number 45112 410006) is missing. I have searched the usual suspects David Silver, John Oldfield etc but it appears they have been discontinued and no longer available. However, CMS appear to have then for 5.5 euros but when postage etc is added on, it comes to a silly 24 euros for something that weighs a few grams and probably cost a few pence to make back in the day! Manhattan motorcycles in Sheffield also appear to have them at £15.58 (probably plus VAT) and postage is more than £6. This probably makes them more than CMS. Can't find any on ebay. I have emailed John Oldfield to see if he can source me one somehow.
Anyone got any ideas please apart from biting the bullet? Paul

If your not in a rush, someone will be putting CMSNL order in, could arrange to tag on the order and chip in on the "postage contribution" I think they call it.. Re posting would be just a first class stamp...
I would put a post in the wanted section first, someone might have a spare, ( but I can't check if I do until the end of Nov), generally these polish up ok, and just need the tab tweaked with long nose pliers
Have you got the pad spring clips, as they are even harder to find....? Don't loose them!
(The CB400NB calipers I done, I found the most difficult and pricey, compared with the other two types)

Good idea about sharing postage costs and not really in a hurry - is anyone planning a bigger order sometime soon? The other 3 retainers cleaned up very well and I have just spent some time searching the garage for the missing item without success. As you say, the pad spring clips are no longer available as I tried to get some but luckily I still have them although they are a bit rusty.Paul

John Oldfield in Southampton sourced a bracket retainer for me and charged £7 which certainly is better than paying 24 Euros to CMS. I think he got 3 in total so will have 2 in stock if anyone needs them.
It is quite some time since I stripped the calipers and on trying to rebuild them have got totally confused on how the pads are fitted. I note that the 250 has pins but the 400 pads just seem to "float". Is this correct? Paul.

Hard to put in words, but the pads on the 400 are held in the calipers by the small 'arms' at the end of the pad. I'm sure it will make sense as you start to put them back together

Yes, they just float, as the little section that makes the pad T shaped, bears against the bracket...Glad you got that little clip, at a sensible price..

Thanks for the input Ian and NA44. I suppose it would have helped if I had put that bl...y stupid bracket retainer thing in the right way round! I can now get them together although they are very fiddly. Whoever designed them must have been a real nutcase but presumably they are like this on other models.
