I had the pleasure of looking at an unrestored 74 Norton Commando 850 today. Trying to get it started after being in a San Pedro shop window for a month or two was something I’ll never forget. Certainly not fun in 85 deg heat wearing a grey t-shirt either, by the time it fired up myself and the vendor were totally cream crackered.

Sadly not. I just couldn’t live with it at the money he was asking. Cheaper than the UK but it looked better in the pics. Don’t they all? Would be hard to live with for me too I think. After all the huffing and puffing and getting it going for the third time, I stalled her again. I guess one gets used to them though and they are certainly not all like this. Never take the electric start (in general) for granted though, I guess especially as those joints get older and more tired. This was HARD sweaty work.

I have 8 bikes that start the old way no problems ,and I have a w**k leg.the reason why people do is thay do not know how to start their bikes or set them up.older bikes are high maintenance and technology that was out of date even in my generation.i have two a10s one is a early one the other the last of the line both are different to start but you get to know them and keep in there good books

there was agreat video somewhere online (I’m good at losing things on the interweb) that showed a tourist kicking away at an indian enfield, getting hot bothered and exasperated, then the indian tour guide comes over, gets the bike ready to start and pushes down on the kickstart with his hand and the bike just pops into life

The kicker or this Norton really required some strength though, believe me. But of course, the more you get used to them, the stronger that leg / muscles would get.

fair enough, I’m 6’1” and theres a bit of me and I struggled once with an old bsa A10, the owner told me if I could start it I could have a go on it, it actually went second kick (much to the owners disgust) but it did feel a bit like kicking the bowels of the engineering universe over

I got some new shoes today...... a bit more hardcore as I’m realising my Dunlop Green Flash are quite useless after one kick.

I just thought about it & tried to remember the last time I started a bike by the kickstart & it's well over ten years since I done it, this made me a bit sad to be honest it quite satisfiying kicking them into life, I used to have a 2 stroke 250 Suzuki which was a pig to start & when you got the knack it was ok but no one else got get it started without a sweat but me.

19 usd plus tax at Walmart earlier. My son says an hour or so ago when he noticed me with new shoes....... 'great new Timberland shoes dad'.......I said 'what??'. We the both agreed they are Wrangler (by the obvious label) and tbf probably of equal quality? If i'd have spent 180 bucks more I think I'd be more credible in his eyes. Strange old world.

They will last as long and the difference will pay for lots of Hawk improvements

They will also kick over a lot of old Brit kickers easier and the dirtier and less trendy they look amongst 16 year olds the the better IMHO.......bring it on.
