Hi lads I have a red 400nb..bought as a runner, but a little noisy.. Sounds like exhausts are blowing but I fear a little to easy.. would a blown head gasket give the same chugging noise as there seems to be oil around the front of the motor in this area?

Could be. Blown gasket would likely have oily black mark. or If it's just oil, the inboard front and rear, port side, Cylinder head bolts have rubber seals at the base of the barrels, and copper sealing washers where they bear against the sealing surface at the rocker mount, is there oil coming from that forward left inboard bolt position? The bolt could have been removed, and a bit of debris down the hole preventing proper seating, N.B. steel bolt into M10 X 1.25 tapped, blind hole in the engine casing, so should be down without excessive force (danger of stripping thread in casing).

There is a lot of old oil at the front of the head..will clean it off to see if it's leaking as you say.. something for me to go on..cheers

Hi Nick, welcome to the forum. Good luck with the oil leak.Had something similar with my 400N when I got it. I took the head off, couldn't see anything obvious, but replaced head gasket, dowel seals etc and it's been ok since.
