being a tight yorkshireman I cant resist what I think is a bargain chemical symbol for ammonium sulfatefound this welder on gumtree for £25 and had to give it a go. it was advertised as having a problem with the wire feed so a quick investigation and I found this cog in the feeder gear box with two teeth missing, great thinks me all I have to do is get a new cog, er no, I ended up having to buy a whole new wire feed unit (£62 with postage) which is a bit of a bugger but I still reckon I got a cheap bit of kit so after a bit of re-assembly and buying a new tip (of the correct size, I think it had too small a tip in and thats how the gear got sheared in the first place) I had my first ever attempt at welding. its far from perfect I know (come on its my first go!) but I’ll accept marks out of ten and sarcasm (cos its all part of the fun) and practice makes perfect. now where to get a gas bottle, I’m thinking co2 fire extinguisher...

Shame 3D printers cost a small fortune as you could have printed one off

Is that just a bead of weld or have you actually welded two bits together

Is that just a bead of weld or have you actually welded two bits together its sort of a half weld, in order to bend the 3mm steel without snapping it I cut about halfway through with the angle grinder and then used that as a sort score line if you will, so the weld is simply putting the strength back onto the bend. not quite upto welding 2 bits together yet, had a go with some scrap bits and I’m certainly not putting pictures of that mess up...

Shame 3D printers cost a small fortune as you could have printed one off looked into the 3D printer option for the cog, but its still in its infancy and therefore damned expensive. I’m sure it will come cheaper and could be a godsend for intricate little bits and bats

and forgot to say note the correct tool to use in the last pic as a strength tester who needs youngs modulus when you have a good durable lump hammer

I see it can also be gas less, so you could skip the gas bottle & use flux cored welding wire?

Looking forward to your report I bought my gas less set 22 years ago, I'd just bought an mot failure Capri & among the jobs it needed to get through the Manx test before I could get it registered was repairing some seriously rotted rear spring hangers. The plan was to do it myself, but my mate Robin, who knew how to weld, did it for me & made a cracking job of it, so I think it's as good as gas in the right hands.

I’d agree with that, if I handed this welder to someone who really knew what they were doing I’m sure they would set it up better than I’v currently got it. the wire feed setting seems to be the critical area when using gasless and I need to play around a bit more to get that right but I’ll get there
