I was speaking to the MOT tester yesterday & he told me that soon our tyres on our bikes will fail the MOT if they are over a certain age not sure if it was eight years old limit but it was something like that i never knew there was a date of manufacturing on each tyre but there is & when the law comes in we will have to chuck the tyres away regardless of how much tread is left on them. One of my tyres was made in year 2000 & the other 2007 so both would fail under the new law.

I've just replaced an as new front on my CB 500, it was a 2006, but for peace of mind I took it off as I didn't want it going pop at 80/90mph on the motorway..

But that also means the spare in your boot would need binning every 8 years, providing you kept a car long enough

I got 'NEW' tyres for my Capri a few years ago and they were already 3 years old so u have to watch out even the ones on my range rover I put on last year were 2 years old

That's a good point, the "shelf life" of a tyre is supposed to be 6 years, if you buy a cheap tyre it's gonna be old and then stick it on a summer only machine you'll get no miles out of it.

If this happens they would be better to regulate the sales of new tyres, so the remaining life is shown on the sale ie. cost per year, probably most of my tyres will need renewed if it's only 8 years. I've got some unused ones that could time expire!
Perhaps we could cover all the roads in recycled rubber tiles, from the avalanche of old tyres this idea would create...

They are going to be MOT exempt at 40 years old anyway.....(the 78's already are). (The bikes, not the tyres).

They would probably add it to the the "road worthy" definition, 8 years seams to short, its normally 10 years for engineering system flexis which get more abuse than a tyre probably. I've got tyres that are perhaps 15+ years old and are fine, but do have some where the compound has lost its flexibility which would be replaced if going further than the garage. My 250 had the original tyres when it arrived, but has now a newer set on (different wheels) done 3700miles/38 years so say about 100/miles year, could get super soft sports compound and still last 8 years . No doubt the bureaucrats will be plotting another Giraffe output product...

interesting, so what happens to the partly worn tyres we all ditch? they wont be ending up in africa or india or china by any chance? and then at the end of their life (down to the canvas) they wont in any way be getting burnt (un-filtered) for power... another stroke of genius from know nothing pen pushers

the mot has just had a update mark a mate from school and a fellow biker has no info about this ,his garage changes a lot of tyres and knows the manufacturer's are wanting a 6 year age limit on tyres. so it might be your insurance company not the government that makes the decision for you

nearer 120 Chris, these 500'sare built for speed😁 you better let Ian know then Dave Rarely go over 65 on mine - starts to get hard work hanging on above that. On a trip down the A483 dual carriageway to mid Wales a couple of years back, Gill overtook me on her Virago & upped the pace to 75 - she thought I was going slow for her benefit. It was ok for her, sat behind her big screen, while my arms were aching from hanging on . I had a bit of a contrast with tyres last year. I replaced all the tyres on the car after less than 5 years & 10K miles. Loads of tread on them, but they had cracks in the rubber from sitting out in the UV all day long. I also replaced the rear tyre on my CB500 after 2 years & 17K miles - the brown mark I thought was mud & tried to clean off turned out to be the canvas! .
