It's come to my attention of late that the 400 stator is a rare beast indeed and there are a couple of different types... I am currently having mine rebuilt at BB bikes and I just wondered if there is anything I should be checking that may have caused it to burn out? I was thinking maybe the regulator rectifier?

Rare beast? I don't think any rarer than most 35 year stators, Zephyr. Sometimes the word rare can be used to bump up prices. Be careful out there...

I think they just go with age.....to my knowledge, nothing external will effect them going pop or working forever - a bit like the CDI's that can be working one minute, and not the next. I also see what you mean about there being a few differing (part number) types for the Hitachi unit on the 395cc. Currently, I am curious about 31100-413-035, later superseded to 31100-443-720. Sometimes the only differences can be the part numbers, applies to many parts.

I've emailed the guy who repaired mine to see if he knows the difference between the different part numbers... I shall let you know when he gets back
