1980 not a good year for me regarding bikes. My brother had a bad crash 1979 when we were out one night,he almost lost a leg, sold my 2 bikes then my biking days were over.Following year 1980 a mate Steve was killed on July 11th.I did get back into bikes in 1981 on a Superdream 250 and a 750 four then in 1984 the younger brother of Steve Richard also a mate was killed riding his bike on July 11th!!! No more bikes for me till 1988 when I bought another Superdream,a 400 this time.

In 1989 my best mate sat next to me in form class one morning and was sobbing his eyes out. I naturally asked what is wrong?......the response was that his 18 year old brother had come off a CB125 of all things the night before and had not been lucky. What surprised me was that he would turn up at school on new FZR600's etc....really powerful machines in comparison but the bike he died on was a 125.......never leaves you such experiences.

I was surprised that Steves younger brother Richard carried on riding his 550 Kawasaki then buying a Z1000R and then a Z1300,he’d just ordered a new fuel injected Z1300 when on the 4th anniversary of Steve dying he came off at speed and hit a wall

Thread was never meant to be a place for those who have passed before us on their classics.....
But if this is what it is meant to be, then so be it. R.I.P to all concerned.

That year I was preparing my tanzi blue 1978 CB400N for a trip to France when I heard my friend Graham had been killed riding home from work on the Friday . He was riding a BMW R65LS as his parents believed it more sensible than the RD400 that would have been his choice . I wasn't sure about riding bikes after that and spent time on my pushbikes as it gave me time to consider things but somehow motorcycles worm their way back into your life .
The CB400N had come from a little corner bike shop in Northampton as a swap for my Bultaco Frontera enduro bike - it was great going from 25 to 55+mpg .
