'Black Chrome'
Classic bike restorers, what is this please?
Is it paint, an anodising process, or something else?
Anyone know what the official process of 'Black Chroming' is on Exhaust Systems is (was) ?
Thanks in advance.

I would imagine it is a plating process.

Nick the in thing at the moment is ceramic coating am I guessing that you maybe are thinking of your CBR exhaust because that would be perfect for that

I thought my VT250F silencers were black chrome originally, I have re painted the though 😬, why are you asking Nick?

Carl my mate has just got a system for his vt250 from Japan and he is getting it ceramic coated and will look better than new and last for ever and there is a power benefit as well I think

No, the reason I asked and why I have decided to not go for that XJ600 is the rarity of the exhaust system and even if one was ever found used in solid order, no doubt it would have to be heat resistant painted, taking away that nice looking 'black chrome' effect. I'm too much of a stickler for originality for it not to matter. I just wondered if black chrome was a genuine 80's phenomenon or a highly polished black heat resitant paint.

Some of these processes dislike 'going through it again' on used exhaust systems. What I mean is it's difficult trying to have an exhaust silencer re-chromed due to them dirtying up the plater's tanks.

I wonder if you polished hard through that VT exhaust finish if real normal chrome appears or some other bright metal finish?
I'm sure I have seen BC start to lose its blackness on say GPZ900R's and shiny metal (almost browny colour in places) starts to come through on parts of the silencer

Nick - That system above doesnt look like Black Chrome to me. I dont remember any bike having black chrome headers - silencers yes, but not headers. It looks like black galvanizing or 'hot-dip' galvanizing. Very popular and a cheaper way to protect the steel exhaust from early on-set corrosion.
