Evenin' all.
Do any of you experts know how to identify year of manufacture from frame number? I'm trying to decode my old dream to see if it's a 77 or 78.
Many thanks.

I am no expert but they are from 78 and my mate has one of the 1st 700 made and its number is 20007-- if you look on cms each year they give a range of numbers

Here goes. Registered 7/2/78 S reg
CB250T 2004299
I know the motors been swapped out as it's grown another 150cc at some point in it's murky past.
CB400T E 4030618
I have acquired another 250 kicker motor, number unknown at the mo. Assuming its a dream engine as it has the older cases etc.

So are you seeking the age of just the frame?

As much info as possible really. Not desperately seeking but curious.
I wondered if there was a build date concealed in the serial numbers, or I could find a table on the internet with numbers corresponding to year but nothing for our twins.

Been on CMSNL and according to that info, the first 250 dreams had a VIN that begun 1******.
The info is dubious as it states that the follow up U.K CB250T11 as a 1979 model which is well out. These models had the VIN beginning 200**** according to that.
Vague? Er, yes.

Yes I tried cmsnl first but found nothing definite. Any clues as to the engine number starting with a 4?

Any clues as to the engine number starting with a 4? Seems to come back as a 1978 400 Hawk from the U.S:

If only these bikes could talk eh? I wonder when the engine was changed and why. Did the 250 fail? Was it just not quick enough? It won't rev cleanly past 4/5000 rpm. I wonder if the ignition has mis-matched parts.

I think Ian has run the wrong cdi on one of his bikes with no difference more likely the carbs need a strip and clean mine was similar when I got it!

Done that Bodie. 👍🏻 Stripped and sonic-cleaned in acetone. Will have a fiddle with it in the spring. It feels like it's running out of sparks. Very definite cut-off, almost like a rev limiter but only under load. It's eventually a resto project but would like it running a1 before strip down and I've insured it again this year so may as well have some fun with it.
