This may be a stupid question but what does the rubber on the side stand do?
It does not seem to touch anything

My understanding is that the rubber bends over when you place the bike on the side stand and when the bike is stood upright again it acts as a return spring for the stand. I may be corrected ?

It's in case you leave your stand down it hits the ground and flicks it up rather than the actual stand digging in and throwing you off its not specific to the SD it's on all Hondas of that era Pauls 400/4 has one and Daves RS has one

I fitted an SD side stand to the CB125, which didn't have one as standard, as I think the rubber thing works well & there's no kill switch on the 125 so it wouldn't be easy to rig up any kind of stand switch.
