I'm going to attempt to tidy up my DL rider to put it in to a local classic bike show at the start of may. With this in mind, I have a couple of questions.
1. How do I keep the rust of the corroded spots on the chrome work, i'm thinking maybe some kind of spray like wd 40.
2. How difficult is it to paint the engine in the frame, brush or spray
3. Is there a particular silver I should be trying to get.
4. Has any one used kurust i'm thinking of dabbing it on the tank to slow the surface rust.
Any other tips gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.

What kind of show are you entering it in, TD?

It's a local one, run by these peeps www.iowbcmotorcycleclub.Co.uk I've got to call them tonight or tomorrow. It covers bikes trikes scooters competition bikes british and foreign. I've no idea what standard it's going to be. There are some nice classic and vintage bikes hidden away over here. It's a local bike so thought I'd give it a go. Not looking to win nout, just show it off.

It will certainly be a talking point......SD's in original condition generally are.
I don't think you should do much except give it a good old polish.....stand back and get ready to chat.

I echo Fungo's point re: the bike itself being a talking point - I have honestly lost count of hype number of folk coming over at the petrol station, pulling along side me at dual carriageways, etc.
Bit in answer to your questions, in the order that they were posted:
1) rust on chrome - try unto sol, then a good going over with Autoglym Super Resin Polish to build up a protective layer. If the rust spots don't go away at that, search on YouTube for "coke foil chrome" 2) Don't paint it - that's my advice. Give the engine a liberal coating of WD40, then scrub with a wire brush. Autosol on the rocker cover and side engine casings. 3) not needed if you heed the advice in point 2 above. 4) How bad is the rust? Ku rust isn't something to slap on top of existing rust and then paint over. For ku rust to work properly, you need to get back to bare, very shiny metal, and then put ku rust on top of that. If you put the stuff over rust, it will keep it at bay for a month or so, then the rust will come back through. I know because I tried that route on a motorhome we had once. It wasn't successful...

Thanks for the advice, the rust is a nightmare. On the tank, I need something to stop it or slow it down without taking it to bear metal, it's going to be a long time until I can afford a respray. With the rust on the silencers i'm having to use the tin foil method.
