Just going through this caliper rebuild and just wondered if this is correct way of putting the o rings on??? Does this bolt have to be greased? And how come o rings have to be fitted?? Many thanks mark

Hiya
Yes this is the correct way, these are fitted because you have a sliding calliper and the grease is held in place by the o rings, otherwise the grease will come out. Use a copper based grease it prevents rusting

I do not have those small rubber washers/rings on mine, i only had the rubber boots on mine. i notice that D Silvers seal kit does not include these rings either? If they are important where do we get them from?

Whoah boys- this is brakes! You need to be certain you know what you should have as regards parts- and how it should all be assembled? Please read the thread below- you either have the O rings or the sleeve- but not both. And the photo above shows the O rings fitted to the wrong part. Also not convinced Copaslip and sliding rubber parts are the best mix..... honda-superdream.co.uk/thread/4100/help-rebuilding-caliper

Got to say when i first took my caliper apart (straight off my bike when i bought it) it had both rubber boots and o rings on? were the o rings earlier than the boots

Hiya all
Further to my last reply, look at Page 93 (250n) of the Haynes Superdream manual, it does state use a Graphite based grease and this is fine, copper based grease is better than nothing but the best as we all know is the red rubber grease. this won't attack the rubber as all the others will over a period of time. Also the manual shows Four rubber spindle boots to allow movement of the caliper but keeps the grease in. A lot of owners in the past have used O rings because of failing boots...but buy the boots, I think David Silver sells them(?)

.....were the o rings earlier than the boots No- the O rings were earlier than the sleeve Harold was having trouble with- both types of caliper had the boots. Below the bolts off the early 250N/250NA caliper with the O rings fitted in the correct grooves. This then lines them up to float in the caliper bracket shown on the right. The boots fit in the other 2 grooves on each shaft- where the photo above has the O rings mistakenly fitted. The outers of the boots then fit over the machined rings on the caliper bracket.

Two different types of bolt then?
The top pic has fewer grooves and has a recess.

Yep. Early type has 2 identical bolts as my photo- later type has a plain bolt and one with the sleeve that Harold had trouble with....

Your bolt looks the later part- but what bike/frame number are you? Details of the changes in Harold's thread, but we got him this for his rebuild...

As Paul has pointed out there are two different types of bolt one where both bolts are the same and both have the o rings on them and the other type (pictured in Wrighty's first post)where the little rubber sleeve (pictured above) is fitted to only ONE of the bolts. The problem I had was when trying to fit them the little sleeve was riding up along the bolt and jamming them in place, but Paul has since kindly got me new ones from CMSNL although I haven't fitted them yet. I use red rubber grease for the bolts as well.
