I was talking as you do to someone today and they told me that there,s a rolling 40 year tax exemption in operation , I,ve briefly looked on the tinternet and this seems to be the case , e.g.if your vehicle was registered in 1977 from 2017 your vehicle would be tax free and this rolls over so if the vehicle was registered,d in 78 from 2018 would be road tax free , anyone know if this is true ??

You have to register your bike in the historic vehicle class with DVLA and to qualify the bike has to have been manufactured before April 1st in the fortieth anniversary year

But what we need them to do is to start rolling the MOT exempt date as well, been stuck at 1959 ever since it was introduced

The trip out for the MoT is always quite an "event" and I'm not sure there is any justification for being MoT exempt really , odd you can have an old lorry that needs no tax or MoT, can see the potential for issues there . Not all owners of old vehicles are techinically competant , recall a Banbury run entants bike falling apart on the startline - frame was largely car body filler apparently  |

Still a while for me to wait then 2023, if my Gs550E stops pi**ing me off and I keep it that's free tax 2020.

Based on an MoT is only good the day it was issued any vehicle can be non road worthy
The majority of people that own older bikes look after them - My 2 that are MoT exempt are well maintained and serviced
Also the legal requirement to ensure the bike is roadworthy is there
Can't imagine anyone on this Forum riding a dodgy bike
