That is a lot Paul.
Surely a fair percentage of the overall bikes worth?

To be fair I knew the service would be around £350 and on top new front brake callipers strip and drive cushion rubbers and head gasket replacement , I bought the bike new in 2008 and it,s the 2nd major service in a little under 9 years on 24,600 miles , for the last 6 years it,s had oil changes twice yearly , oil and air filter once a year , new fork oil once , I bought the bike as a commuter and as been excellent , I must admit I prefer my SD , I have much more fun with it , a weekday I,m happy to the 30 mile round trip to work on the kwacka5 but on a decent weekend or evening it,s the SD everytime, this has made me realise this even more 😂

I don't think that's to bad last oct I hade tappets done on my blade that's 5 hrs at £50,6 shims at £2.50 and tensioner gasket at £3.15 so £268.15 plus vat =£321.78 and I felt hard of paying that when u think I have been riding and driving since I was 16 and now 52 that is the first time I have ever spent money in a garage on getting something done as I do the lot my self but I felt that some thing that does 130-140 quite often I didn't want to take a chance that's the first time its had anything done so I have got time to save up over the next 19 years when they will need doin again lol

That is really expensive!
I bought a new Kawasaki W800 last year and it cost me £140 for the 600 mile service which for about 4-5l of oil and an oil filter, and a visual check of cables and chain I thought was pretty steep until I read your price!
I'll be doing the next service myself.

This is the beauty of our humble Superdreams.
They can generally be serviced at home. They were made at a time when Honda build quality was at a peak, so they are unlikely to ever need major mechanical expenditure (if they are looked after with regular oil changes etc).
I've got to have a carb tune / clean on my GS500 soon but I'm going to have to use a bike shop I've only used for MOT's before - this is because my regular mechanic has quit the trade. Going to make sure I get a firm quote for the work before they do the job.

Yep, that's the joy of bucket & shim valves! I didn't have my ER5 or my first CB500 long enough to worry about it, and so far I'm ignoring it on my current 500s, even though the everyday one has probably never had them done in 23 years & 26k!

Working now on the other side of the service game with regard to labour costs- a good reality check guide is to work out how much you or your employer would charge for your own rates? You may be surprised at how much people cost!

That's why I do this stuff myself...could never justify the cost to myself...

I,m okay at basic maintenance, but no experience of valve adjustment , head removal etc, so to be honest I stay clear of it though having said this would like the work area and time to do this sort of thing ....
