OPEN QUESTION
Why do Motorcycle Riders not Oil The Chain? (The Drive Chain) I carry an 'Oil Can' in the Top Box and always check the Chain before setting off.
If the Chain needs Oil, I put the Bike on the Centre Stand and Spin the Rear Wheel Squirting Oil on the Chain as it goes round.
When I park my Superdream, I glance at the Bikes parked nearby: I HAVE NEVER SEEN OIL ON A MOTORCYCLE CHAIN! They are BONE DRY,running Metal To Metal.

I use an anti fling oil on the chain - I think it's called 'Wipe Out'. There's nothing worse than a greasy swinging arm.
If you'd like to see a picture of my can, let me know.

To be fair, with a modern O ring or X ring chain you ain't lubricating anything anyway. I clean all the road dirt off with Duck Oil, then spray sparingingly with chain wax onto the inside run only. each to his own.
Worst enemy of chains is overtightening- like checking the tension whilst the bike is on the centre-stand tut tut.
It is unusual for me to have to tension the chain more than once in a riding season- but a 530 chain on a 43BHP bike is hardly being pushed to the edge. And I probably ride like a wuss...

Silver Superdreams are the worry though. Heavy duty chain is recommended. It's the neck snapping 'pull' you have to watch for. Animals.

Of course the opposite is bikes with scottoilers spewing oil everywhere, never liked them, anyway what's a chain?says the Hardley rubber band owner lol. As stated previously modern O ring chains are sealed and oil is cosmetic realy. Who's old enough to remember taking chain off yer bike washing it then boiling it in Linklife on yer Mums cooker,I always had a spare one "I'd cooked" earlier to use lol.

Scottoilers- never got mine to work just right- constantly adjusting it took more time than if I had stopped every 20 miles and lubed the chain manually! Mind you that was one of the old vacuum driven versions- are they not electronic now?

Same here lol. Dropped my chain on the cooker top one time 'kinell took me ages to get all traces off,Mum knew when I'd boiled the chain though she could smell it.I used a redundant deep fat fryer last time when I was boiling chains on me old Brit clunkers, always outside in garden.

Scott Oiler.
This has just reminded me of a little story. In 1999 I put SBY up for sale in MCN. I had just recently purchased a faster more modern bike (a naked divvy) to excite the girlfriend a bit more at the time. I get a call and the bloke says 'Yeah I'd like it. Where are you? I'd pay more if it had a scott oiler on it - I'm a despatch rider you see'.
I recall hanging up at that point.

I remember boiling some of the Duckhams grease up on my Mum's cooker , being too lazy to wire up the handles I'd just stuck terminal screwdrivers through each side......... luckily the chain didn't shift until I'd made it out the back door , did take a hell of a lot of cleaning up though .........

When you think about it though using chains to transmit power to the back wheel seems like an archaic way of doing things when you consider the advancements in motorcycle technology, with cornering ABS, traction control, plus any amount of other electronic aids and Honda even have a self balancing bike. Surely someone should invent a bluetooth or wifi final drive or something like that

In my dim and distant engineering past I seem to recall that chain drives are more efficient than both friction and toothed belt drives. With the worst for efficiency being motorcycle shaft drives as transmitting power through at least one 90 degree bend saps power bigtime...
