So i somehow have gained another bike in desperate need of love. While in my parents garage today i decided to work on one of my old mans bikes that's been sitting for 2 years an Xj600n its in need of wheel bearing front and rear a sprocket carrier bearing and new brake discs, after removing the very stuck bolts in the front wheel i asked My Dad what he was going to do with her when it was in riding condition again as its to big and to heavy for him, its why its sat for 2 years and he has been using his bandit 400. basically if i want to put the work in and the parts its mine to use and keep.

I'm a happy boy tonight and i might not even cut this one up and do a moderate clean up on her.

Kyran

so i have most of the parts i need in a basket waiting for payday. just need to run the wheel down to a local engineers to have the old bolts that snapped drilled out, unless any of you gentlemen have a suggestion for getting them out. and as for clean up or cut up for now it will be neither my main focus for her is to get an mot on her and then slowly clean her up to a useable condition and sneak in afew shiny parts under the radar. wont get a full resto as im not that kinda guy lol.

I've had two XJ600N's - first one was red, reg R209 MJH the second one was one of the last - a silver one VO03 FHN - twin front disc which I think came in on them around 1998.
The silver one was an absolute steal - got it from a guy in Worcester in 2008 for £1400 - it only had 1000 miles on the clock.
Do you remember the first ones? A lot were yellow - seemed to be a very popular colour for bikes (and sports cars) in the mid nineties.

I wasnt that old in the 90s and only just starting to get into bikes through my dad he had a Yam Dt125 smoker and an Mz250 smoker that never worked right, i was hooked from that point on, This Xj isnt the best example of the breed i know the owner before my Dad and he didnt look after it and Dad just rode it for a winter work horse. personally its only now after having sprts bikes and a big twin that i wanted something that just gets on with what it does, its a 2000 W366 AKN with about 60k on the clock and still going strong sounds lovely with the jama exhausts on it and ive found a local engineering shope that will drill out the snapped bolts in the front wheel as a replacement isnt on the cards atm. oh yeah and its black.

Freshly charged battery and she fired up into life after 2 years then sounded like a 60 a day smoker and idled like a sack of dog mess, the old man really knows how to make a bike run like a dog i see carb cleaner in my future now ive just got to get the screws out of the float bowls that have been in there 16 years wish me luck.

Be about 3 weeks until im up there again next weekend is another BIG push on the bobber, the xj looks like the carbs need either a flush with fresh petrol or at works the carbs off and the idle circuits blasting with an airline and some cleaner as it really is rough and the stale petrol was dark orange and smelt god awful.

Just for you Terry, also got all the rear wheel and carrier bearings and seals changed and made the decision to just get a good front wheel to bolt the new discs to.

No problem mate, with a quick clean it came up to a usable condition will look alot better once i can ride it and give it a good going over with some de-greaser and a hose, friday i get paid and can order a wheel and some new bolts to hold the brake discs on and some new downpipe to silencer gaskets and clamps as its blowing a little, then its fresh petrol and start to get her back to running cleanly again.
