Just joined the Forum and wanted to say, Hello. Bought a lovely 250N seven years ago. It got me back into riding after a break of 20-odd years. I'd always hankered after one as a teen (like so many!) and it didn't disappoint. Lots of nods, smiles and comments as I used it as my daily commute in London. But... and it's a big 'but'. Instead of leaving well alone and riding the thing, I decided to fix a couple of niggly leaks and squeaks. You know the story. Fast forward seven years and it's still in bits. Not quite a full strip down, but whole top end came off, almost down to the frame etc. I didn't even have a garage. I was doing it all in my very small front yard. Any-ooh, am now out of London and have a garage. Time to get started. Managed to keep it stored indoors, so it's all in good nick, but I foolishly got the barrels, rocker cover and engine side casings blasted. They look super-new (in that horrible dead grey) but the rest of the bike has its lovely original patina. At the time, I'd convinced myself I was going to do a full resto, but I regret that. I like the tidy, but lived in look. Have decided to look out for casings/top end on eBay (plenty out there) and give them a bit of elbow grease instead. Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for getting that right aged-but-looking-good finish. Do I just give them some serious Solvol or do I need to get lacquer involved too? As I say, not looking for coucours finish. Just something that's as nice as the rest of the bike. Many thanks. PS - great to see a SD forum!! I'm sure loads of you have said this, but it's a much-maligned classic. Always annoys me when you see the list of great bike and it's not in there.

Welcome Danboy42 , mine has a 36 years old used & not restored look To get the castings cleaned up I have used fine wet and dry (1200) after using some coarser stuff to get the crud off then maybe wire wool and Autosolvol to bring a shine - not the supershiny finish some get but enough for me . Have lacquered alloy in the past but have had problems with it discolouring etc so now prefer to leave it "raw" and just polish it when needed . Also means you can improve it as time /patience allows .

Cheers, Bojer. Yeah, I've had problems with lacquer in the past. Always looks worse than you hope it will. Mine's a silver 'un, too. Leccy start. Do many cowls come up for sale?
And cheers, Steve. Just having a nose at 'bikes you've owned'. Mine runs... AP50, FS1E, GP100, CX500, RD250 (x 2), CD175 Benly (still fancy one today), X5 - big gap - 250N (the current rebuild), CB750KZ LTD (a beautiful thing!!), CB250RS, RSX100 (x 2), CB500SY, Enfield Bullett 500 (current ride and tastefully street scrambled; dead good fun to ride). The Dream has been the only constant over the last seven odd years since I started riding again. Can't tell you how much I regret dismantling the poor thing. IT WAS FINE!! Just a bit weepy at the head. Finally got it up on the ramp yesterday and wasn't quite as horrified as I thought I'd be. Nice project for the winter. Looking forward to talking nonsense about these wonderful bikes.
PS - ain't it funny (and, again, I'm sure members have already mentioned this) that so many 'cool' bikers take the p*** out of Super Dreams (do we go for one or two words?), but never have I had so many people come up to me and want to have a natter. Maybe not as fast, but equally as memorable as yer LCs and big Zeds etc. If you were riding in the late-70s/early-80s, you will remember us!

Cheers for all the welcome words. Have got pics of most of the bikes... we are going back quite a few years. Will take a pic of the Super Dream, too. Is there a button to add attachments to a post?

Hi There ................. Great post I would agree. I have bought loads of SD parts over the last 2 Years with the intention of refinishing to different standards. I work at an engineering company and have access to wet / dry blast, plating / painting / baking facilities. Most of the parts ( generally engine cases / rocker covers / Footrest hangers ) cost < £10.00 and I'm planning to experiment on different finishes over the next few weeks. Will update you with photos etc for feedback.
Super Forum for an underrated Super Bike.
Will be in touch soon.
Cheers.

I'm getting round to it!! Just got to work out the photobucket stuff. In the meantime... can I ask a quickie. Will engine casings from the late-70s era bikes fit the early-80s era? Or did they make changes?
