Dear all!
I am about to buy an 1988 250 Superdream in Hungary, I have been looking at all sorts of other bikes, but these are the most beautiful I could find. I am into older bikes, and these are just perfect!
Anyway, I have found an 1988 black 250N, which looked promising, I followed some advise, one gets when looking at a youngtimer bike - the spokes are firm (no rivet movement), there is no smoke coming from the exhaust - either cold or warm, no oil leaks, the paint job is somewhat tired, but I would think that's just normal. The speedo is stuck at 20 km/h, rev meter works just fine. The gears are smooth and precise, the clutch is smooth too, sometimes slightly hesitates at taking revs from idle... I stop it right there, I don't want to have an hour long rant, my question would be - there is a slight knocking noise coming from the engine, the owner obviously says it's normal, but I don't know. I did a small (crappy) video on my phone, you guys will know lot better, if there is anything strange on the bike, or it sounds just right? Also is there anything else Superdream specific, I should look at, when going back?
The vid link is youtube.com/watch?v=Of21cYJhPyg
Thank you for all your advise!!
Gabriel

The video didn't go to a bike, so I can't advise about the noise. I would say as long as it starts and runs okay and the price is right it's worth the risk. When you say the tacho is stuck do you mean the needle only goes so far or that it is stuck. Only going so far might just be the inner cable is failing. Stuck sounds more like a malfunctioning tacho itself but I'm sure a replacement would be easy enough to source.

Sorry got that the wrong way around, but the it'd not matter. Unless, if it's the speedo and it'll read so far and no further it could also be the driving washer type affair in the front wheel. I had a similar problem on my RS recently. As I have before. The washer gets flattened and so one past a certain speed no longer drives the speedo gear and the needle wavers all over the place but will not go beyond a certain speed. I just bend it put again with a flat blade screwdriver. Works every time, but new washers are still available if needed, od they were last time I checked.

Hi all, thanks for the nice words... I know, sorry for the wrong link, I was repairing a lens and pasted that one The correct link is www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2AcsqxRa7sAnyway, the speedo is stuck for good, at the 20 km[h mark. It is - I guess - a new speedo job, as somebody already tried to repair it and it looks just... bad Richard - where does the Hungarian comes from?

Hi Gabriel, welcome along. I can't really make out the knocking on my rubbish laptop, but the usual culprits are the cam chain, balance chain & tappets and with any luck, doing the adjustments for these might quieten things down.

I agree, adjust tappets, cam chain and balance chain, all not to hard to do.

Guys, thanks for all the advise... On the other thread (sorry I posted this twice, as I thought, I won't get answers posting in the wrong place) somebody also suggested silencers being removed from the exhausts. I am somewhat on the fence with this one, the price is right, after all he wants some £600-700 for it (the normal going rate over here is more like £800-900) and he throws in a cafe racer style brand new seat and a spare fuel tank. He claims to be a very careful owner, but there rubber bit missing from here and there... But I love these bikes so much... Anyway, I will try to put the cam chain and valves questions, and see what he has to say about them.... Richard - nice try I was just thinking - a guy called Richard from Surrey is an unlikely candidate to be Hungarian, but you never know

Somehow, Gabriel, I don't think you're using Google to do do your English Translation!
