I have read this article and it does make sense in a lot of ways to me,because it will remove the complications around selling a taxed vehicle, reclaiming tax, lost or stolen discs. but thats just my opinion.

It was announced in the small print of the last budget, and only came to light a couple of weeks after.
Makes thinks a pain for the buyer - gone will be the days of paying your money, phoning your insurance co, and driving away the same day. At the point of sale, the tax will be null and void, so you'll have to find a post office that's open, with an insurance cover note in hand - so Saturday afternoon or Sunday collections of a vehicle will be out. Unless you decide to wing it and drive home tax-less (which could also invalidate your insurance).
And for sellers, you'll still only be refunded in complete months. So if you sell in the first week of the month, that's a months tax lost. And if you then tax your replacement vehicle the same week as you sell your old one, you then have to pay for that full month. So it's lose-lose for everyone, apart from the Government...
On the plays side, if you've got a beast of a motor 1st registered after 23rd March 2006 that's in the top tax bracket, instead of having to fork out £264 for 6 months or £480 for 12, you'll be able to pay it monthly - which will make it easier to budget for

Or you could date the bill of sale for the day after collection so in effect you are riding home on your own insurance on a borrowed bike

Problem then is if you get flashed by a camera on the way home for example... The previous owner wouldn't have a leg to stand on, so wouldn't even contemplate signing a receipt to that effect (I know I wouldn't)

Not worth it these days with all the un-marked cars about. I saw an unmarked car the other day pull a motor over for all I can assume was speeding on a dual carriageway (it was signposted 50mph, and he was doing about 65). And the unmarked car was... A Hyundai i20... I only wish I was joking!! As a previous proud owner of a couple of ex-plod 3.2 V6 manual Omega's, the credit-crunch's effect on our police force upsets me I really can't see me wanting to buy any of the current crop of ex-plod motors. They've always been seen as a cheap supersonic barge (aside from Omega's, there was always the good ol' Volvo T5 to rely on, or else a cheeky late Vectra 2.8V6 twin turbo), but now they're either all staid shopping trollies with knackard suspension, or over-priced Beemer diesels which have a problematic Diesel Particulate filters and Dual-Mass Flywheels, and cost a bloody fortune. As a born petrol-head, I've always loved the concept of going as fast as possible for as cheap as possible. There is no coincidence that in the last 10yrs we've spent the majority of our summer hols over in Germany.

Perhaps a declaration of borrowing signed by both parties would do the trick . And as for second hand police motors at least there are no Morris Minors anymore .

My mate had a traveller back in the seventies he was'nt much of a drinker so he would often have half a dozen or so bikers piled in the back on a pub crawl it was one of the most reliable motors he ever had only thing that let it down in the end was the body work ,shame we all loved that Moggy

Not so long ago I was waiting in a line of traffic waiting to pass an accident when I heard a siren an saw flashing blues come up behind me and a dark grey VW T5 van complete with tube holder and ladder rack came flying past....the sneaky gits. I've also seen a Subaru impreza with a 3 letter private plate on it...

there are valid points about the tax, especially the phone the insurance company, get it covered and drive / ride it home,I overlooked that one !,and the point about claiming back and re-taxing part way through the month is a good point, potentially you could lose up to 6 weeks rebate / tax ,sneaky f**kers the reg on the plod car shows just how devious they are, what happened to the days of the old jam sandwich marinas that we could all out run
