Does anyone know if there was a cut off date for the black and silver pressed number plates and when you had to have the reflective plates. I would like a pressed plate but don't know if it would be legal on a 1981 bike. Thanks in advance Mark

you can have a pressed metal yellow/black plate, but the black/silver plates are only legal on pre '73 bikes.

Staying with 1973 but also slightly off tack:
It's a common misconception that 25 year old cars and bikes still enjoy being 'tax exempt'.
In 1998, the government (at the time) stopped the tax exempt rule rolling forward each year - meaning it was frozen at 1973. And do, check but I think it was also a certain month in 1973.
Shame eh?

As from 1st April 2014 the 40year tax exemption for historic vehicles is rolling again. Vehicles registered before 1st Jan 1974 are now exempt.

you can have a pressed metal yellow/black plate, but the black/silver plates are only legal on pre '73 bikes. Love pressed alloy plates on anything pre-1980.... totally pressed or with the raised plastic digits....both look very authentic.
That said they should be suitably dirtied up (or aged if you prefer) and have the right font:
IMHO, too many reproduction number plates look too modern on modern classics these days - the font on a lot of Perspex plates (1970-1990's) was wide but these days many are supplied too narrow. The font changed in 2001. I will go as far as to say it can spoil the whole look of the vehicle - UK number plates are big prominent things and ARE an important feature!!!!
I cringed when I saw that Audi on Ashes to Ashes with a modern looking plate on it......

I agree Mr fungus, that's the reason I put the knackered old original plate back on my bike. It looks a hell of a lot better.

I've got my knackered old pressed plates hanging on the wall in the garage. I did have the original on my SS50 very briefly when it was restored but it just didn't look right being old and battered when the rest was as new My SB still wears its original plate, but its not pressed, the letters are stuck on. Shows the dealer info along the bottom too but they are long gone... I hate seeing plastic plates on an old bike!

And do, check but I think it was also a certain month in 1973. it used to be the vehicle had to be manufactured before 1st Jan 1973, so it was really '72 and earlier that was free. In April this year things changed and they reintroduced it rolling on every year at 40 years old, so atm it all vehicles before 1st Jan '74 are free. As far as I am aware there are no plans to introduce the MOT exemption date to a rolling calendar. its stuck at pre 1960 for now.
