see pdf manual............balance chain just visible thru the slotted cover on the clutch side, quadrant rotates anticlockwise to tighten, its sprung loaded and adjustable relative to the shaft. if its run out of "slot" then clutch cover has to come off, see speedo drive thread for info........also the balance shaft has a "DOT" on the 14mm af nut thread, what position is that?? if its nearing 9 o clock then balance chain replacement time etc is very near......if its at noonish when adjusted say " thank you god!! ".......
whilst the cam cover is off ( if your fighting it your doing it wrong, there is a sweet spot where it just slides out and back in....don't shear the cam cover BOLTS, they "bottom" on the BUTT FACE of the bolt at the upper end of the thread ) ) checked cam timing for "lag" suggesting cam drive chain wear............when crank at T ( T being cam timing ( valve timing ) , F being fire and the other marks to the left of F being Ign advance ) the 2 marks on the cam sprocket should be level with the cam cover gasket face......if "leaning back" then system wear.........
when adjusted via the camchain sprung loaded adjust mech, and you gently rock the flywheel a few degree back and forth, see the "play" in the cam chain, also rock flywheel in similar fashion and see balance chain once adjusted, any drwwwwp??
is yours a 250 or 400??

no not really apart from the charataristic "whine"........
if balance chain slack a low down noise will be heard.......tapping from slack valve working clearances and worn cam/rockers..........noisy cam chain........at the head...........low down knocks from worn big ends and rumbles from slack main bearings...........rattle from slack clutch basket ( goes away when clutch pulled in ) and out of balance carbs, and gearbox noises ( ditto when clutch pulled in ) .....
new ones where very quiet mechanically apart from the distinctive Whine.........
