Hello, I signed up to this forum a few days ago, I hope it can be a good place to share wisdom and stories. I hope there is a picture of the Superdream I've been doing up over the last few weekends below. So far I've just fallen short of phase 1 which is getting it on the road. Failed the mot yesterday on fork seals. If anyone can advise me on how to remove the upper tube from the lower one I'd appreciate it. The Haynes manual just says to remove it but something stop it as the end reaches the seal. Any ideas? Cheers

Hi mate, looks like you'll have fun with that, to remove the slider from the fork tube you have to displace the top bush, you do this by pushing the slider down to the bottom then pull the slider sharply (put the spindle through and stand on it to hold the bottom down, the bottom bush will strike the top bush, repeat until the slider is free, replace the bushes if they are worn. (I assume you've already removed the circlip). Oh and welcome

don't forget,theres a allan stud right at the bottem of the fork leg,think its 10mm,you need to hold the leg in the vice,or put it back in the clamps,then undo it

Oh yes, don't forget that, I didn't have a suitable vice, but have a cordless impact wrench that loosened it off, get some brake cleaner as well to clean off all the cack.

Thanks for all the welcomes. I could have introduced myself better. My name is Sam and I am in Southampton. I've only just started biking and am working my way up in bike sizes, this Superdream being the latest and largest. I have yet to buy a vehicle younger than myself (25) or with an mot. So for most maintenance tasks I am usually pretty competent. I got to ride to the mot bay and back yesterday and loved the bike. Seemed to pull away nice and smoothly and had tons of capacity in the throttle for my style of driving/riding.
Back to the fork issue. That sounds like a good plan with the spindle. I don't have a vice either but I have managed to work all the bolts loose. The only thing I hadn't realised was that the circlip has to come out before the slider tube. The Haynes suggests that the C-ring only needs removing later to get the seal out. I've had a go and am struggling to get the clip out. It has some curved notches in it, am I supposed to be using a special tool or should a screwdriver be capable? I don't want to damage the slider surface.

The clip will pop out fairly easily using a flat blade screwdriver, if your unsure take photos and we can guide you through step by step.

Remove the wheel, brake caliper and mudguard. Undo the Allen bolts, one at the Bottom of each leg, then remove the top chrome bolts. Loosen the clamp bolts and slide the legs off the bike. At the top of each stanchion there is a threaded washer to remove then a dished washer then remove the spring. Remove the dust cover, then the circlip then simply slide the stanchion out of the leg. Replace the seals and then the circlip, replace the stanchion, and spring, top up with oil, then dished washer then threaded washer. Refit to bike and make a brew.

The teflon coated bush on the end of the stanchion tube hits the teflon coated bush in the top of the fork bottom casing, which hits the back up ring under the seal and pushes them out, once the circlip and back-up ring has been removed above the seal.

Thanks very much NA44. Your picture is very helpful. I had removed most of the dirty oil/grease but still hadn't been able to find holes in the circlip. I bought circlip pliers a few months ago and they've been a revelation. That, along with Arsix's suggestion, had it out in a jiffy. Now for the hard part of dealing with the pitting.
