Well took the "new" Superdream 250 out for a spin today, leaks fuel from one carb overflow pipe=float levels?biggest problem being that 1000 rpm=7 mph. This can't be right surely?I'ts a 1983 Deluxe and I have stuck a speedo from a 1980 250 on it new chain and sprocket been fitted not sure how many teeth though.Seems to rev freely in low gears but runs out of steam at 55~60 mph I know it's no Fireblade but expected more lol

To be honest my 1980 250 SD runs out of steam at about 65 when it's at 4000rpm.
I also think I should be getting more but wonder if I'm expecting too much from the old girl.
I will be interested in the comments.

My 250 is comfortable at 60, it will do 75/80 but it's not happy and feels like I'm going to blow it up.

When mines doing 50 that is 7000 rpm on the tacho,if it revved to 10500 I'd be doing only 75 mph!!

Went to work (and back!) on mine today. It seems to be most "comfortable" 50-60mph. I did manage to get it up to 70mph this morning (even overtook a car & a van) but on the way home could only manage 65mph :-(
To go any faster I'd need a really long stretch of flat road (at least two miles) with no traffic, flat on tank and elbows/knees tucked in. Not much chance of finding that in north Norfolk, too many holiday makers dawdling along not to mention tractors etc.
One problem has come to light, it seems that after a few miles the revs won't die back to tickover, seems to keep revving at 2,500rpm when I come to a halt unless I slip the clutch a little then it'll drop down to normal tickover (1,300rpm) with the clutch pulled in/neutral. Any ideas? was thinking maybe a jet is sticking but cannot account for why it would drop back to normal after a little engine drag. Apart from this its running really well. More fettling required methinks!
TT.

My former deluxe ran nicely at 70/75 on the motorway pulled through all the gears but you had to work at it and try to keep the revs above 6000 in every gear to make quick progress but it was at its most comfortable at around 50 and 5500rpm

Hey tigertail try checking for any air leaks on the inlet manifolds as I definitely know from years ago that inlet manifold air leaks do contribute to this even when you said slipping the clutch a little brings it down and it then stays there

Going to check everything over asap ie valve clearances carbs etc. the clutch is not slipping maybe my speedo is f##ked have a few spares lol will swop over and check sprockets, had a 250 and a 400 in eighties recall 250 was asthmatic but not ridden anything small for a few years,my regular ride is a Hardley due to 2 knackered knees and even that seems fast compared to the SD.Intend putting a 400 motor in one of my 250s(have a 400 in boxes to use)

Never paid much attention at a 1000 revs it only ticking over after all when you move off you wind up the revs
