The frame number is on the headstock and the frame number plate is on the front down tube so even if you chop the top rail out it won't affect your reg documents. The only issue would be with your insurers who will ask if it's modified and if you mention frame mods they may take issue with it although they may not. But if you don't inform them and God Forbid, something happens you may have problems.

Never a truer word Harold i agree with you 100% be careful with headstock alterations, i am seeking a professional welder to make a jug for a 250n frame rear alteration.....i could do it myself but just to be safe?

Unfortunately the procedure for frame mods is quite straightforward. Once the frame is modified, the bike is classed as "radically altered" as far as DVLA are concerned. This voids the current registration as the bike is no longer a superdream and would have to be re-registered on a "q" plate after passing MSVA. To keep it's identity, a rebuilt bike must use the original, unmodified frame and two other major components (wheels, forks, engine or gearbox)
Many have and will continue to chop bikes (myself included) without declaring modifications but you'd be wise to check up and weigh up the facts before blading in with the grinder, especially in this day and age of computerised MOT tests, random VOSA checkpoints and insurance companies looking for any get-out clause.
I'd seriously think twice about chopping a frame just to fit a component, when it would make more sense to chop the component to fit the standard frame where possible.
Like Harold, I'd hate to see something happen and then problems arising through registration and insurance.

Hi jonnyboy I've got this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141367111158I just wish I had looked in to the the legal side of it first I don't want it on a Q plate and all the other hassle that goes with chopping the frame so I will have to get the new tank butchered now never mind I will get there one day . If I can get that tank on and my seat fitted with the springs and the side mount number plate on for hogging the bridge I will be very happy I don't mind of the electrics and anything are left till later
