So at long last my 2 fully rebuilt 250 kicker engines are almost done. One is going into the 1979 frame and will form the basis of a good (but not world class like some I have seen on here) restoration. the other one will go into a fab powdercoated 81 frame I picked up along the way, and it's that bike I want your opinions on....
I was going to do it cafe racer stylie, but the more i think about it the less I want to do it. Don't get me wrong, I like that style and some SD ones that I have seen here and on the wider net look the nuts, but the best ones have the back of the frame chopped, and this frame is far too good to do that to. So I have been thinking, and here is my cunning plan.
I am old enough to remember the birth of the hot hatchbacks and how that turned fairly ordinary cars like Golfs and Fiestas into cool sought after motors. I think that i now want to do something like that with my second frame, but I want to do it in a way that i can still return it to stock later on if and when I ever want to.
So picture this.
Standard black high gloss powdercoated frame. Giuliari sport seat with late seat cowl. Hagon shocks, very clean 250 kicker with Motad 2 into 1, modified rear mudguard and tail light (possibly CX500 lens) with original old Honda indicators (not SD but defo from a smaller Honda) mounted directly to the sides of the rear light itself. front indicators run as bar-end style, side panels certainly gone, possibly altogether or possibly replaced with shaped clear perspex ones that are tricked out in some way. CB250T clocks, shortened plastic front muddy, CB450DX tank with inset HONDA screw on logos (fits straight to the existing frame I am told - got it yesterday but haven't tried it yet).
Colourscheme?? I am thinking of a few different options. I would probably need to fettle the seat cowl a bit if i lose the side panels, but assuming i do the I would paint the tank, front muddy, seat cowl and possibly the headlight casing and the rear muddy if it ended up as a plastic one rather than a metal one. I am thinking of gunmetal grey, or maybe a deep metallic blue, or something with twin stripes running the length of te bike as per a Ford GT (more delicate stripes though) or possibly some retro Honda colours (i need to research that). Decals/badges would possibly include retro Honda tank fixing as above, plus some trick graphic on the perspex side panels calling it Superdream Sport. Probably a bit of shiny chrome badging too, but discrete.
The whole thing will only work if it is really top end finish, and that is where I would want to take it.
I would like to know what you guys think and if anyone else has already done something similar I would love to see some pics.
