Good luck Peter, hope you recover soon. As to the fuel tap leaking, a common problem but make sure it's not the pipe or it's connection to the tap. Silvers stock nos taps, but their £70. They also do a pattern version for £18. I've had a few of these. They do start to leak after a few years, but I don't think I've spent 70 quid on them yet, despite having 3 SDs on the road at one time

Thank you very much for that, it may take a while to get it out of my system so just taking it easy for now. I did get a repo petrol tap, the idea was to replace the worn parts in mine and keep the original tap body. atb peter

Well first test run today since carb rebuild and new/replacement petrol tap parts. I set both mixture screws to 2 turns out from closed, ( previous settings r/h carb 1 1/2 turns out, l/h no idea adjuster broken off!!!!). Only needed half choke this time compared to full last time. Engine started first time and idled at about 2000rpm on choke, 5 minutes run then no choke, idling at 1200rpm now, ( slower than before 1500rpm), great pick up and return to idle so I have left the mixture screws as is (2 turns out from closed, slightly rich I think). The main difference was that when I shut the fuel tap on the external fuel supply, you could actually se the level of fuel drop in the tube, I let it run until the tube was totally empty. This was a huge improvement as on previous tests the fuel level would remain the same but the float bowls were almost empty!!!!!!!!. So all I can think of is that there must have been a blockage in the float bowl vents,( small brass tube half way up the carbs.). So this is what I think happened, 1 leek’s in air box rubbers to faulty clamps, 2 not getting enough fuel in float bowls due to a partial vacuum. Engine running a lot cooler and smoother due to slightly richer mixture ( I may adjust later!!). All in all a good result, oh apart from the new petrol tap not fitting, too large. It’s probably a shame but after my first ride out in 36 years was spoilt by a misbehaved sd it’s now been part exchanged for a 2015 Mash Roadstar 400, could this be a big mistake!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Atb Peter

I did look at the Enfield meteor as a replacement ( sorry mr Honda ), but it’s quite heavy more than the Superdream lol. Also I like the classic looks of the Mash Five Hundred 400. What really annoys me is the fact that a classic ( 1970/1980s ) Japanese bike is almost twice as expensive as a retro classic 2000 bike!!!!!!!

Yes, but I doubt that they will.be still around after 45 years like the Honda!

Just had my replacement for the sd 250 delivered my 2015 Mash FiveHundred 400, what a mouthful lol. I really hated parting with my superdream but unfortunately it just wasn’t for me. Could anyone please tell me what’s happened to the classic bike market, the prices for the sd seem to have plummeted over the last few years? It now pointless trying to restore one because you just won’t get your money back!!!!!!!. Anyway thanks to everyone for replying to my thread. Ps this is the new bike lol

Your new Mash 500/400 looks a real belter congrats on your purchase.. The classic bike prices falling off a cliff recently is a supply and demand issue. Everyday machines like SD's largely appeal to those who had or lusted after them in their youth, as that generation is now starting to drop off the perch the pool of prospective customers is fast diminishing..
Same thing is happening in the car market with everyday run of the mill cars from the sixties and seventies I believe..

I want the cost of SD parts to fall so low I can get what I need for a tenner then have three SD’s in my garage 😀😀. The bike does look nice though mate.
