..I've just had some devastating news from those charming and ever helpful people at Rex's Speed shop. Apparently my low speed pickup is alas titsup on the Hitachi stator fitted on my 400 .. Does anyone have a known good one to flog me or better still can advise where I can get a new old stock one or a recon one, as Rex at present doesn't offer a recon service on this part..

superdream parts man on ebay has one listed (£160 I think) or get rid of the old system (the stator remains just for charging, could upgrade to gl650/gl1000) and fit one of these www.ignitech.cz/en/vyrobky/dccdip2/dccdip2.htmneeds a good pickup but I reckon you could use cb350/450s without too much trouble

Thanks for the reply Buster...Initially the info in the link you posted passed over my head that fast I could hear a sonic boom. After the first line in the spec it might as well have been written in Greek.
If one of these little boxes will work with a GL650 stator will it not work with the Honda one? Also the method of mounting it to obtain the correct timing within the confines of the timing cover could possibly be a bit of an issue.
I'd be interested to know more about upgrading to a GL stator as you mentioned. Can you give any more info I've not heard about such a mod before.

I'm just in the process of fitting one to my 400 thing, I decided to make life difficult for myself by buying one wired/programmed for a cx500 (easier to buy off ebay) but you could purchase one ready programmed (and I think wired, but its really not that hard to wire up) for a cb400n.
basically it takes its power direct from the battery (hence the charging system needs to be good) the only part of the original stator it uses is the outer pickup to take a pulse signal, it then uses the battery supply to charge its capacitors and should, in theory, deliver a much more reliable ignition curve. no more relying on 40 year old windings.
the original stator is then just used to charge the battery.
hopefully I now have a lead that will let my laptop talk to the cdi and fingers crossed I'll get chance to programme mine up this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes

so finally found a lead that works (bloody windows is the worst invention in the world) if I'd ordered this direct from ignitech I'd have bought one of their leads once laptop and cdi are able to communicate its just a case of clicking programme and then clicking read to check whats on the cdi unit. so in theory the only thing that can pack up now is the outer pickup or the actual alternator windings, as I mentioned they could just be swapped, I'v read that gl650/gl1000 will fit straight on (likely need an upgraded rectifier?) and gl1000 replacements are available brand new.

I see the GL stators on ebay at £56, that's one big saving on a full rewind. What we need now is some public spirited electronics wiz to do a full "how to install a bargain GL stator, and CDI box for dummies" article to help out others like me, who are far less capable at anything to do with auto electrics..

this is a gl1000 stator listed as brand new at £79.99 in theory that should screw straight on under the mag wheel (I'v not tried it) another option would be cb350s/cb450s that I know for a fact fits just make sure you get the ring with it that it seats on. as I think I mentioned its probably a good idea to match a rectifier to the new stator, very simple to wire up, just connect the three same colour wires from the stator to the rectifier. the other side may take more puzzling out depending on rectifier, the SD has an earth (green) a charging wire (red/white) and whatever the other one does (sound like a proper electrics wiz now ) again not too difficult. the way I got a live for the cdi was to root about in the birds nest inside my headlight until I found the connector coming from the ignition switch (the one you put your key in) then I took the black wire terminal out of its block (on the loom side) and soldered my power wire to it. it really does need to be soldered too as this connection must be reliable, then bent the tang back out and refitted it in the connector block. further down that wire I added a blade type fuse holder and a 10 amp fuse and thats the difficult bits done. the rest of the wiring (if its not ready supplied) is very straight forward. the only slight quirk is that theres two very specific earth connections, I can only assume its a belt and braces set up

Good read buster as ignition systems have got less complicated and a lot cheaper it's the way to go as there are more superdreams about now than probably the 90s like most if not all my bikes now have electronic ignition fitted I presume it will not be long before a kit will come out .rex make kits for the kawasaki triple and the tryspark system I have on the t150 tranform the bikes.its likes of us in sheds that make good bikes better

so a bit more meddling (cant help it, honest ) I'v now fitted cb450s stator windings and a cb450s pickup this is running with the standard hitachi mag wheel and it all just bolts on, the only modification needed are suitably shorter bolts. to cope with the higher output I'v also fitted a cb450s rectifier, just tested the system and got a nice healthy 14.7 volts. also tweaked the ignition curve a bit, any more mods to that will be a degree at a time to the base advance as according to ignitech if thats right the rest of the ignition curve will then come to life. the main reason I wanted this to work with a different pickup is the 400 SD one is a double (complicated and expensive) set up. so I wanted it to work with something much simpler and hopefully reasonably easy to find

Good going there Buster ..expanding the possibilities of keeping us all on the road...What model year CB450 are we talking about here, and is that a 450 pickup shown in the picy, as it looks identical to the Hitachi SD400 one.
