I have a spare engine with a stripped drain plug hole, that I wish to Helicoil. From looking at pictures of a removed bottom case in the manual it looks like there is no need to remove anything more than the generator stator assembly for me to be able to remove the lower case.
Could someone tell me if this assumption is correct or is there something I've missed.

You are right. Page 2 of "The Derby wreck " also covers the removal. 17 bolts holding it.

oil pump chain needs to come off, it might be possible with the clutch basket on but you'll have a hell of a fiddly time with the gear shift arm, much easier to remove if the clutch is off. worth checking the balance chain tensioner is working properly while your in there.
