Hi just started to clean the carbs from my 83 400n. I took the float bowl off one of the carbs and noticed that the rubber bung was missing. Do all the carbs on this model have them and what does the bung actually do.

I'm fairly sure all models should have them, mine do. They can get hard & fall out, It's worth looking through Wazzbo's carb guide, he lists sources for replacements, I think NRP is one.I've not had to replace any of mine - yet! honda-superdream.co.uk/thread/6352/beginners-guide-stripping-cleaning-carbsThe slow/idle jet takes it's fuel supply through a small hole to one of the other jets & the rubber bung prevents fuel getting in from the float chamber, so even a hardened/shrunk bung will cause problems, let alone one that's missing. The bung allows removal to clean the jet, which I think is pressed in, so not removable.

Hi Totally agree with Ian & Terry.
However, I'm not sure which years of bike had the removable jet, on the 81 model (CB250NB) I managed to get the jet out; just!! so possibly from then on!! I have no real knowledge that is the case.
I must admit I had a brand new screwdriver that fitted snuggly and my heart was in my mouth when I took mine out as if anything breaks (must admit the 1st jet I didn't think it would budge) like the head !! I leave you to think of the consequences. I basically did a complete strip and ultrasonic cleaned both carbs and bought 2 new Carb Kits from our friends at WEMOTO. But yes the simple answer is you need to get a rubber bung possible 2 one for the other Carb as well.
I've attached picture below for reference to show its possible.

That is very timely advice as I was literally about to ask the same question!I have ordered new bungs from Andy ( ayrtonuk on eBay)£4 inc p&p . My "new "400 is running a bit rough so stripped and cleaned carbs ,no difference ,swapped CDI ,no difference ,swapped coil, no difference. Am now doing what I really should have done first off- checking valve clearances!! In my defence it was showing all the signs of carb trouble and it has just had a full restoration ,which-judging by the high standard of work and attention to detail,I think was done by someone in the know. The guy I bought it from said he had been fiddling with the carbs and a quick check revealed they were basically hanging off, all clips were loose as was the head steady..so my "common sense" pointed to that as the problem area. I have now fitted another set of carbs and the backfiring is still present....the engine is now clock cold so time for the feeler gauges...... probably back in a bit screaming "HELP"!!!

PS..dont think those rubber bungs like E5 (ethonol)fuel- bungs just fell out, were hard and shrunken and the tops were swollen like mushrooms!
