I am not sure what you mean but I know the European 400 had two types of engines one was a lower power the full power engine was good for the high 90s all day I have no history with the low power engine but 80 sounds about Wright pete as dealings with the low power engine he will help you in identifying what engine you have

I don't know anything about European spec 400's, but my much pampered low mileage US spec CM can just about make it into the low 80's on it's 85mph speedo..

I looked up on the net and found this 1978-79 data: www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/Honda/honda_cb400-II%2078.htmTop sped is here set to 166,4km/h - 103,4 mph I know when driving 130kmh/81mph, i feel that its really enough. Its not even nice to drive on my CB400N at that speed. But would really like to have the surplus for overtaking situations. (Excuse me for my poor English.). BR Niels

my 1981 cb400n has no problem of going over the 100 mark on the speedo showing 96 on the satnav and would give me a true 100 if i tried this is on private roads of course the low powered 400 is about the same as the 250 i guess but with better bottom end .as these bikes are not motorway cruises and about the same performance as a modern equivalent.there is info on the forum i think about how to spot the low power 400 and what you need to convert to full power the cm has different gearing through design is slower.i do not know what the speed limit is where you are i tend to keep of the motorways on mine and keep on the b roads were its very happy and well within its capabilities.if its a low powered 400 well its giving what your going to get

It seems to have the "German" camshaft. If you take off the valve cover, you can see, that the cams from the camshaft are smaller.

It seems to have the "German" camshaft. If you take off the valve cover, you can see, that the cams from the camshaft are smaller. So it is the 34mm lobe height and you would prefer the 37mm... I was thinking of going the other way with my cb450DX, If I had to do engine work I would change the cam to a 34mm, it would then be like a CB250N with more torque, perhaps a little more torque than the German 2G...
