Hi, I've just bought a 250 superdream. The previous owner said the battery was knackered which prevented it from starting. I've charged the battery, put some new fuel in and used easy start on it to get it going.
He was right the battery is knackered but with the easy start I can get it to the point where it almost starts then the battery dies.
I bought a battery from Halfords which actually had less electrolyte and charge in it than the old battery (it's going back tomorrow). Can anyone recommend a decent battery and also, if that doesn't sort the starting issue, what would be the next thing to check? A mate suggested, if it ain't the battery, or fuel the next place is the carbs as they are most probably dirty. Any ideas?

If it's been stood any length of time the carbs will definitely need cleaning and probably need cleaning two or three times before they are right

I agree that the carbs may need cleaning but it is worth checking a few things first. Is fuel getting to the carbs (i.e. is the fuel tap filter blocked) - take off the fuel pipe at the carb end, put the end of the pipe in a container, open the fuel tap and watch for a good flow of fuel. If the flow of fuel is good re-attach the pipe. If you can, open the carb drain screws and, with the fuel tap open, see if fuel comes out (that will get new petrol into the carbs) close the drain screws. Is the spark good? With both plugs out see if there is a spark on both sides. There is a safety cut out when the bike is not in neutral so if you see no spark try pulling in the clutch lever. Is the choke operating? I found mine was seized in the 'off' position. you should be able to see the choke operating at the carb end when you pull the cable.
I am sure others will add their suggestions. Dennis

Totally and whole heartly agree with Dennis on this one, although I would check for a Spark first. One further thing you could try is to put some Carb Cleaner in with your Petrol Mix when you get it running.
Halford Batteries usually good especially as they supply Uasa Batteries. Another source is Wemoto as I got a good Gel Filled Battery from them via the post.
Beat of luck and let us know how you get on. Phil
