I just did this last month with my bike in bits and without mot. You just take your V5 and a completed v112-declaration-of-exemption-from-mot The post office change the V5 to historic, tax it for a year (for free) and send off the v5 to swansea

Thanks sandy, Sound a easy process, a lot of superdreams must be coming up 40 now, nice to just have to insure, stick petrol in & ride off into the sunset 😀

40 by first reg. date or by manufacture date? MOT exempt on their 40th Birthday. Tax is more complicated! To be Tax exempt they would be first registered or manufactured in the preceding year (but up to 7th Jan if first reg) become Tax exempt on the 1st April of that year. You still have to go through the process of taxing the bike, (and submit a v112? MOT exempt. declaration), it is a payment exemption. (I've had two bikes changed to historic vehicle recently but result was rating on the contact with "that" organisation).

Something quite nice about having a piece of history officially recognised. My Deluxe isn’t 40 for another 16 months or so but I think the V5 showing the appropriate recording will be almost as good as the TAX and MOT exemption, assuming it makes it of course

As previously mentioned, the bike is MOT exempt on it's 40th birthday but the taxation class change to historic might have to wait for the following year.

I assume you get a refund when you change the tax class to historic? I would not assume anything with the DVLA It would seem that it depends what working group you end up getting;- From my experience 80% of them a very good and have been so helpful, the other 20% are worse than useless and snippy with it, there appears to be no gradient in between (and the 20% make me not want to phone them, as it ruins my happy mood for the rest of the day). Got a most helpful person the week commencing 17th August, useful info, fill in a V10 (which requires a V112), do a covering letter explaining what you are requesting (as my 250 was still currently Tax and MOT). As my 250 was registered end of April 1980 I had obtained a Honda Cert of Conformity that showed it's manufacture date was Oct 1979. I asked if I could send a copy, "no we need the original". I'm fairly sure I indicated my concern about getting it returned. Send everything to DVLA Swansea SA99 1BF, (V5, V10, V112, and Honda letter for the 250, and the V5 for my 400Four 1979 reg). Obtained a Cert of Posting when sending it. (I previously discussed the issue with the local in shop post office, but they said they can process simple tax renewals, but what I was after we had already agreed better I deal directly with DVLA.) A letter came back about mid Sept confirming that My 44 was taxed from 1st Sept, and they were returning any original documents (of course there were no other original docs for the 44). The Letter said the V5 will come back separately, which it did in the same or next post. A quite a few days until the V5 turned up for the 250, and also a tax rebate for 1st Sept to 31st Mar2021 But still no separate letter and return of my Honda Cert. Both V5's were generated about the 11th Sept. Phoned DVLA, about 21st / 22nd Sept and talked to a most helpful chap, who conferred with someone and said it was only 10 days since they had done the process, and their backlog was such it may still be a while (days). If you don't get anything back after a while, get back in touch and we will raise an incident report. So phoned back on Friday to ask them to raise the incident report, and have a look for the Cert (it was £30 from Honda). The operative was very difficult to speak to, anyway they conferred for a millisecond (if they actually did). That sections attitude is to destroy the original supporting documents, unless you specifically ask for them back! I asked if they were Joking, they said we would not know it was worth £30 (it's value was not really the point). I ended the call by thanking her for potentially destroying my £30 Cert. P.S. The 250 has done 3800miles, so at todays rates it's probably paid about 37p a mile in tax (with a couple of SORN gaps), due for an exemption I think! Would be struggling to claim that rate on expenses for a trip....

Today 20th Oct the posty dropped a DVLA letter through the door, content 1. Tax confirmation letter and noting enclosure /return of original documents dated 21st Sept. 2. Original Honda letter with DVLA date stamp of 21st Sept. 3. Original V112 returned with 21st Sept DVLA stamp. I can only the helpful chap I spoke to on the 21st Sept, sorted it???
