Last 250 engine going back together with a little pointer to all about exhaust gaskets.... Ever found the studs to be a bit short when you try to get the nuts back on ? Then check that ALL the previous exhaust gaskets have been taken out !!!! Just sayin.

Ha-ha, good tip. I remember doing the same on an engine where I took 3 crushed seals out of a port

Started the 400 engine rebuild now. Already missing stuff. Cylinder locator dowels. Looks like i am missing a few and was wondering if anyone has a few in a bits box ? Also wanted to check if the camshaft sprocket for the 400 and 250 are the same.

Oh yes, while I am asking silly questions. Can the stator from a 250 work on the 400 ? Likewise the clutch ?

I.think I have read on here that the 250 & 400 charging systems were made by 2 different manufactures and are not interchangeable. The clutch though look the same , I have just check a couple of part numbers on cmsnl and they are the same numbers. Cam shaft sprocket also the same part number.

Rex's Speed Shop has a good guide on testing stators with quotes resistance values. I keep a printed download in my Haynes in case I ever need it! I am not sure on the clutch but the Haynes gives different lengths for the 'spring free length' for the 250 and 400.

I think I'll have some dowels (no idea where, but I wont have slung them) I'll have a look. the clutches must share a majority of components (the outer basket fits 110 models, 250 and 400) I'd see if theres a plate count in the manual. in theory (mine, so probably wrong) the 250 stator would work if you teamed it with a 250 cdi, the problem is I suspect the ignition curves are likely to be different so it probably wouldnt go like you expect a 400 to go or it could go like a junkie with a giro. let us know if you give it a go...

Thanks everyone, and you know Buster I may just be the pioneer to try that ignition swap. Worst case scenario, as it is only for the rat bike, I will chuck one of the 250 engines in if it doesn't work. Looks like I am missing at least 3 dowels by the way. 😁 When I get a bit further with the tank, frame and wheels I will post some pictures 👍

When the CDI on my 400N packed up, I ran it with a 250 CDI for about 18 months & couldn't tell any difference - might say more about my riding than it does about the CDIs

A mongrel junkie with a giro it will be then ! I have a tank to make fit, an engine to complete, a frame and wheels to paint, with a change of bearings and tyres, PLUS three other standard bikes to build. At this rate I will be taking on an apprentice !
