I did it the easy way with a cordless drill holding the valve from the top. Coarse paste then fine. Came out well and hopefully allow full hp to be achieved.

That second (Yorkshire borrowed) engine..... It was all going so well ! Had gathered the right bearings, checked the fit with the plastigauge stuff, replaced a worn balance chain and correctly fitted it all with the carrier and crank all bolted and up lovely, all tensions correct.... Then, just the oil pump... So, they made two types ! Who knew ? Well probably everyone but the engine numpty I expect... Bo***cks ! Even the faithful spare engine has the larger one so once again I am in need of help. Anyone have the right pump, or can put me in the right direction to get one without losing my shirt ? This learning curve is piggin steep !!

must admit I didnt know there were two different oil pumps, doesnt surprise me though its one of the areas (oil feed) that honda addressed on the later models. which model is the engine in the photo? might be worth giving superdream chappie on ebay a shout as the oil pumps dont usually give a lot of trouble (hopefully easy to buy)

About £15 gets one. Just don't want to buy the same one 😕

it looks like its the early type that you need. I'm guessing that honda upgraded the oil pump to cope with the external oil feed to the cylinder head on the later models (and the oil cooler on the 450 engines). shame the bridge piece is different. if you search for an early pump (upto about 1980) you should be ok as a little bonus you can search both 250/400 as its the same pump

looks to me like this is the oil pump that you've got and this is the one that you need, its fairly easy to identify with the little flat bit that has 414 engraved on it

That indeed seems to be the problem. Took these pictures today from good engines, so I need an oil pump. At least I now know what I am looking for.

Engine progress. The oil pump should be here on Friday to complete the build. Also getting a decent new bench set fitted tomorrow. One part fixed, another on wheels. After this engine I have a part built 250 to complete, another 250 kicker that needs a new sump, then it will be the 400. I will start a new thread when I begin the 400 bike project. Just going to use up the old "Q" plate frame, and a load of bits to make a green lane everyday rat bike for a mate of mine. He has a bad leg, so it needs to have a low seat and he needs to carry stuff sometimes. He likes the "knackered from a distance, but very serviceable close up" look. I have attached a picture of what we placed together while discussing ideas. Alloy mudguards and a BIG headlight to be added.

Update on engine 2 (Borrowed from Yorkshire). Oil pump arrived and fitted a treat. Now to complete the build, but just before I do I have an update on the valve grinding with a drill. A highly experienced fella pointed out that just spinning them around in one direction would possibly not create an even seat, and may cut a channel if the grit of the paste did not move about as by hand. I must agree. I did in fact open and close the valves whilst changing rotation many times to adopt the hand method in some way. It did get a good result, though I also take his point that there is no substitute for care and patience. One other thing I have learned is where ALL the bits go that arrived in the full gasket kit !

Just put the Yorkshire (Borrowed) engine together ( understand it is a Yorkshire thing). This was the engine that began this thread and was the result of having an engine number missing on an otherwise running motor. It now has the borrowed engine case and crank carrier built up with the good parts from the original engine. It needed new crank bearings to marry the original crank to the donated case and carrier, a gasket set and a replacement oil pump. The "experimental" bit is to do with the two cylinder bolts that go where the cylinder has two oil channels cut. I had one with good original rubber, but the other I used electrical shrink wrap rubber, which I am told also works. Sealer also added to the top of the threads. We shall see if it is indeed any good. Many thanks to all who donated not only parts, but also guidance. I have not rebuilt any engine for almost 40 years and have never before done the superdream engine. Now I have, I can tell you that with decent tools and a very clean working space, they are quite simple. There is also no substitute for following the book exactly. I have four frames to strip and re-paint and two more engines to go over, then I should be posting some pictures of some more familiar looking stuff.
