if that shift mechanism has had that sort of abuse I'd be having a very careful look at the selector forks, better to be safe than sorry

As you say, while it is in this many bits I may as well. With the knackered bits left over, I was thinking of welding them op an making a glass top coffee table. Do you suppose I could flog it on Ebay and get some money back ? 😜

Some may have seen the fella on YouTube stripping and rebuilding one of these engines in about 40 seconds......... well I am here to tell you that is Bo****ks. Those simple little screws holding the selector gears... They came out for him looking like this The other little bas***ds came out for me looking like this Yes, I know they have been punched in place, and you have to lift the edge, but still.... and that git did his wearing a clean shirt !

For those who like a good mystery to be solved, this is what was wrong with the gearbox on this engine getting stuck in second gear. Turns out "Bigfoot" had been having a go on it and bust the small selector disc on the end of the selector drum right off its locator. So to be on the safe side I have replaced the whole set of gears and selectors from an engine with a broken block and we are back in business ! I expect to remain and engine numpty until the engines are complete and working well, THEN I may request an upgrade ?

I think you've done very well. considering the superdream is just a thumper twin, it can be quite a difficult engine to work on.

Case sealer used was Hylomar Blue. Good enough for a Rolls Royce jet engine, then it's good enough for me. My Dad used to say the same thing!
