I just had a go on a friends Z400, and it was a really nice little bike, as the owner of a pretty decent CB400T Dream, it got me thinking about the comparisons between the two. First thing to say is that without putting a stopwatch against the two bikes, the new Kawasaki is way quicker, no surprise right, there is 42 years between the two bikes, but a closer look shows that the stats are closer than I thought. Weight Honda 166kg kerb weight Kawasaki 168 Kerb Weight Power and Torque Honda 43bhp and 24 ft-lb Kawasaki 44bhp and 28ft-lb So far pretty even, however when it comes to performance Top Speed Honda 103 mph ish (according to tests at the time) Kawasaki 110 mph (hard to actually find the data - have seen any thing from 105 to 115) Acceleration Honda 0-60mph 6.5, 1/4 mile 15 seconds Kawasaki 0-60mph 4.5, 1/4 mile 13 seconds The only thing I can think of is Horses got bigger and kg now weigh less You can tell I am bored right now!

this slightly annoys me (only a bit, but it does niggle) the figures quoted on paper can look very appealing but I feel they are mostly nonsense. I'm not saying they are untrue, I just think they have little to do with how a bike rides in the real world. for the figures to make real sense (torque/bhp) you would need to see the graph that shows not just peak power and torque but how its spread across a usable rev range, then it would be possible to do a valid comparison. for me the best way to see if a bike is what I want it to be is to go out and ride it on the roads I like.

Buster - just for you I have taken a bhp/torque graph for a 2018 z400 and put in the data from a 1978 road test on the CB400T
