after much head scratching/swearing I'v finally got to the bottom of the enigma code that is the crankshaft codes (can I say a big thankyou to wazzbo for posting an excellent guide to this) and after some careful measuring of crank pins and main journals I'm happy to say the cranks in really good shape (testament to how good these superdream engines are). next came the order to cms for the bits and pieces I need for the bottom end (HOW MUCH!)

been on and off cleaning up the crank cases (tedious job), so yesterday I thought I'd have a break from that and see if I could find a starter motor under the layers of muck (yep, eventually) so stripped it down and discovered it was almost as dirty inside as it was on outside. so a good clean and a bit of paint on the mid section (note the proffeshunul restoration, sprayed over the screws , I'd have made more of a mess though getting them out) popped it in the bottom oven (its an aga thing) to cure for a couple of hours and then sat down to watch boris's address to the nation. I think that means no more self isolating with my bikes, ah well we do what we have to

Just took my bike for a ride from the lean-to round the back and parked it on the drive round the front and when I've had a clear out and pressure washed inside the lean-to I'm going to ride it back .Back on topic re 250 shells when I got mine done I had to buy a used crank shaft and con rods complete cos I could'nt get any shells ,so yes Buster you are lucky having the 400

I took the old tyres off yonks ago and binned them (old and knackered) I have a bead breaker (which is a godsend) then just normal tyre levers. I'll see if I can dig the bead breaker out tomorrow and I'll pop a pic up

frustration time. got all my new shells for the crank (with no help whatsoever from UPS, useless parcel service) so out in the garage I start the process of dry building the crank, big end first, so fit new shells and firmly nip up the rod and have a feel. this is where its all gone wrong, theres up and down movement, bugger whats going on? so I take the good rod and shells off the other side and try the shells from that in the bad side, perfect feels lovely. so I look again and discover cms have sent me black shells instead of brown . so looked on silvers (faster at the moment, probably painted their shop green) and they have brown in stock, so ordered a second set. confession time, if want an inner tube nipping I'm your man, yep nipped the front (prat) so took the nice new inner tube out, patched my stupidity and refitted, seems to be holding wind now

just tried the main journal shells and phew, they are the right ones and they feel fine.
new fly in the ointment, as I was cleaning parts ready for assembly I had a feel at the balance shaft weights, the rear one (nearest the crank) all feels ok, the front one sloppy as hell. so opened it up for a look and rubbers knackered, man with big bar strikes again...
