I found this image of a CB400N on the net, and whilst the seat looks a bit weird I do like the look of a chrome mudguard (CB400T?) as opposed to the stock plastic one. This got me to thinking... what it would look like if it had the seat and cowl and the tail light moved back to under the cowl? Im guessing a bracket would have to be made to accomodate the taillight under the cowl as it normally bolts onto the plastic guard? Has anyone tried this before?

When you say 'stock plastic one', just to clarify, these chrome ones were correct for most of the models in fact, 1978-82. Have you been keeping the wrong company? Glad you found the forum, we can put you right.

Haha! Thanks Fungobat Just realised that I should've specified that I was talking about the rear mudguard not the front one. My 1980 has a chrome front mudguard and thought it would look classy if the rear one was chrome too like the one in the pic. Was hoping the chrome rear would just bolt on as the CB400T and CB400N share the same frame.

I'd guess it would just bolt on (rear guard) but as you say the seat then looks a bit odd, if you could find a dream seat that would work with the rear guard but its doubtful it will work with the tank and side panels. I'd be tempted to try having a superdream seat re trimmed to look like a dream seat at the rear.

This is true, but I still want to retain the seat and rear cowl of the superdream as I do like that look. I've done a rough photoshop job showing how it could look... not sure if I got the angle right on the photo of my bike though.
In two minds about it at the moment and a bit wary on spending AUD$120 on a dream guard for something that may or may no work. Does it look weird?

Proper CB400T rear mudguards are as rare as rocking horse poo. But there are plenty of aftermarket mudguards that fit (at least fit the 400T), they are I think, mostly really meant for 400/4's though (despite the fact many say 400T).

I looked at the chrome copies for my cafe racer and at around the £15 mark theyre cheap enough to see if it would look right on the bike

That's a lot cheaper than what I was looking at.

That looks good Thanks mate! The chrome mudguard bolted straight on replacing the inner black metal guard. Ive since made it so the tail light doesn't sit so far in and is just poking out of the rear cowl.
