APPARENT ELECTRICAL FAULT ON A SUPERDREAM
WORKING ON A 1981 CB400N SUPERDREAM RECENTLY, FOUND THAT THE ELECTRICS WERE DEAD.(NO IGNITION,NO LIGHTS)
I HAD FITTED ANOTHER ENGINE TO THE BIKE,CONNECTED THE BATTERY AND ELECTRICAL PLUGS. ALL ELECTRICAL PLUG CONTACTS HAD BEEN CLEANED BEFORE FITTING. (NAIL CARD,EMERY CLOTH) BATTERY WAS FULLY CHARGED AND BATTERY CONNECTIONS HAD BEEN CLEANED AND CHECKED.(AND GREASED)
THE FAULT WAS THE PATH TO EARTH. CHECKING WITH A WIREMAN'S BUZZER FOUND THAT THERE WAS NO CIRCUIT FROM BATTERY EARTH CONNECTION TO CHASSIS. THE EARTH LEAD GOES TO THE LONG ENGINE BOLT WHICH SHOULD EARTH TO THE CASING. IT WAS NOT EARTHING. I WITHDREW THE LONG BOLT. CLEANED THE EARTH STRAP TERMINAL AND FITTED 2 COPPER WASHERS. (EITHER SIDE OF THE TERMINAL) RE-FITTED THE LONG BOLT. SWITCHED ON THE IGNITION AND STARTED THE ENGINE.
CHURCHMAN
NB HOW MANY BIKES HAVE BEEN SCRAPPED DUE TO THIS ELECTRICAL FAULT?

Brake Piston Sizes Compared, some notes (Not m/f details) May be useful if sorting out a box of bits (or even when shopping for new pistons, as a recent post mentioned)

Bracket, retainer 45112-445-631 mainly for the CB400NC in the UK (also CB400ND, CB900F2C, XBR500, CB400t Hawk 1981 U.S.A., CB400D SUPERHAWK III Japan, etc.) The ends of the brake pads bear on these whilst the brakes are in operation. This little component does not seem to show as a separate part on some NC parts books, but is on the bracket Assemblies 45110-443-763 & 4511-443-763 (credits to CMSNL for the pic)

The enclosed part No. label suggests that it is for the CB250N..( But I do not have a "N" M.Cyl to check it against). Brake M.CYL_CAP_ 145519-443-611

Yeah the early one used countersunk screws didn't it?
The change (from memory) occurred on the NA possibly even late N models - had more of a rounded topped screw and metal washers.

I'm no expert here but I think your right on the model change, whenever I search cms for parts for mine it often comes up 'upto number and after number' 1980 cb400n england is the list I use
