Hi Guys,
My 81' 400N is still struggling. It's running pretty well but only up to about 5000rpm of about 55mph, so still usable for getting around. After trying a few things went to my local go to guys who ultrasonic cleaned and set up the carbs which made little difference. Opinion seems to be that carbs are so worn they need replacing. So question is does anyone know where I can get replacements, either original or pattern. Or dies anyone know of an alternative that could be fitted??
Many thanks in advance,
Cheers
Paul

just before you junk the carbs, have you checked the valve clearances? anythings worth a shot and it never hurts as its basically part of a good service

Thanks guys,
I will look at the French ad, sure I saw one for a left carb the other day somewhere. I've done all the other stuff, tappets, valve timing, fuel filters, ignition etc and cant find anything wrong. Might just have to take the chance on some second-hand ones.
As always thank you for your feedback/help, much appreciated and will update as/when I get it sorted,
cheers

Sounds a bit like it's not advancing the timing, could be the advance pulsar coil on the alternator has failed.a fairly common problem on the 400. The 400 should be at full advance around 4500- 5350 rpm, if the it has failed the bike won't run very well above those revs. Hers a link to crouchy's video on checking ignition advance is working, the test is on a 250 but the principal is the same for checking the 400. youtu.be/2d8nSHhfdQ4

SUPERDREAM CB400N CARBURETTOR
JUST OUT OF INTEREST,HAVE YOU CHECKED THE SIZES OF THE JETS FITTED TO YOUR CARBURETTORS?
THE JET NUMBERS ARE PRINTED ON THE JETS WHICH CAN BE REMOVED.
ALSO,HAVE YOU CHECKED THE CARBURETTOR BALANCE WITH A BALANCE GAUGE?
